From Kuaikeji, October 21: Apple is pressing ahead with its 6G technology development, the next frontier in communication standards succeeding 5G, which is anticipated to be unveiled around 2030.

Apple is currently on the lookout for a 6G cellular modem system engineer. This professional will be tasked with 'shaping and constructing next-generation cellular communication technologies' to facilitate the company's smooth transition into the 6G age.

In the job posting, Apple elaborates that the selected candidate will join the cellular systems engineering team, contributing to the definition and advancement of next-generation cellular communication technologies.

As Apple advances towards 6G, this role will encompass involvement in 3GPP standards, feature planning and definition, system design, as well as hardware and software architecture and task delegation. The emphasis will be on boosting communication performance, minimizing power consumption, and enhancing the overall user experience of Apple products.

Specific duties include outlining functional and technical specifications for next-generation cellular basebands, devising algorithms to bolster performance and energy efficiency, and working in tandem with hardware and software teams to integrate relevant technologies into tangible products.

Applicants are expected to possess a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of 10 years of industry experience in cellular communication technologies. A thorough understanding of cellular communication standards and proficiency in MATLAB, C/C++, or Python are also prerequisites.

6G remains in the research and development phase, with its spectrum bands still to be finalized and official performance benchmarks set to be ratified later this year. The objectives of 6G encompass elevated data upload speeds, reduced latency, and enhanced energy efficiency. While 5G is already being utilized for home broadband, such applications are poised to expand even further with the advent of 6G.

Companies including Apple, Qualcomm, Nokia, Samsung, and Ericsson are all engaged in research endeavors related to 6G.

Apple is a founding member of the Next G Alliance, an industry consortium established by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) with the aim of propelling 6G development in North America.

According to the current roadmap, the inaugural batch of formal 6G technical specifications is projected to be finalized by the end of 2028, with commercial networks and compatible devices expected to surface around 2030. Apple's ongoing recruitment efforts also signal that the company is proactively assembling its R&D talent for next-generation cellular communication technologies.
