Audi Unveils New Car: Priced from 298,000 Yuan, Boasts 630km Pure Electric Range

Most seasoned car enthusiasts are likely familiar with the tale of the Audi A2. Over two decades ago in Europe, this compact car distinguished itself with its lightweight construction and low aerodynamic drag, earning it a reputation as a highly innovative commuter vehicle for its era.

After a hiatus of more than twenty years, Audi has resurrected the A2 moniker, transforming it directly into a pure electric variant, with the A2 e-tron making its official debut.

On September 7, Audi held a grand new car launch event at its headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, introducing this compact pure electric model to the world.

Positioned as an entry-level pure electric vehicle within Audi's lineup, it is constructed on the Volkswagen MEB+ platform. In essence, it is a compact commuter car meticulously designed to cater to the unique driving conditions of European cities.

The timeline for overseas markets has been set in stone: pre-orders will commence on September 10, with official deliveries slated to begin in December. The entire production process will take place at Audi's headquarters factory.

However, the burning question among domestic car enthusiasts remains unanswered—Audi has yet to officially confirm whether this model will make its way to the domestic market.

I. Overseas Pricing Structure: Four Tiers with Euro and RMB Reference Prices

The new car is offered in four distinct versions, each boasting varying battery capacities and power parameters, resulting in clearly differentiated price tiers. All prices are listed in their original euro amounts, accompanied by RMB reference prices for convenience:

125kW + 52kWh Entry-Level Version: Starting at 38,200 euros (approximately 298,000 RMB)

140kW + 61kWh Version: Starting at 41,900 euros (approximately 327,000 RMB)

170kW Long-Range Version: 48,900 euros (approximately 382,000 RMB)

240kW High-Performance Top Version: 51,200 euros (approximately 400,000 RMB)

All versions feature a rear-wheel-drive layout. The top-tier 240kW version can achieve a WLTP range of up to 630km, while the 170kW long-range version can extend its range even further to 646km. In terms of performance, the top version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 5.7 seconds, while the entry-level version takes 8.8 seconds.

This performance is more than adequate for daily urban commuting, although it lacks explosive power, representing the standard performance level expected of a household electric vehicle.

II. The Car's Standout Feature is Energy Efficiency; Other Configurations Are Relatively Standard

The car's most notable strength lies in its aerodynamic optimization, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.24Cd. Features such as an active grille shutter, a flat underbody, low-drag wheels, and hidden electromechanical door handles all contribute to reducing drag and minimizing energy consumption.

With the optional efficiency package, the car can achieve a minimum WLTP energy consumption of just 12.8kWh per 100km, showcasing Audi's significant commitment to energy efficiency.

However, this advantage will be particularly appealing in the European market. European cities are characterized by narrow roads, challenging parking situations, and relatively high electricity prices, making daily energy consumption and ease of parking crucial factors for consumers.

The situation differs in the domestic market, where most families prioritize space, configuration richness, and intelligent infotainment systems when purchasing a car. Few are willing to pay a premium simply for "greater energy efficiency."

In terms of charging, the high-end versions support up to 183kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 29 minutes.

The vehicle supports V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) external power discharge, and some versions can even achieve V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) reverse power supply to households. However, it is important to note that these features are not standard across all versions and require additional purchase as options.

Compared to many domestic electric vehicles, which often include external power discharge as a standard feature, Audi's approach may seem somewhat吝啬 (stingy or miserly).

The car's overall length is just 4.32 meters, making it compact and easy to maneuver in urban areas and park in narrow spaces. Thanks to its short front and rear overhangs, the wheelbase reaches an impressive 2770mm.

The regular trunk capacity is 396L, which can be expanded to a spacious 1336L when the rear seats are folded down. High-end versions also include a small 13L front trunk for storing charging cables and small items.

The space is adequate but should not be expected to be overly spacious. At a budget of over 290,000 RMB, domestic electric vehicles can offer larger dimensions and more generous rear legroom, highlighting the gap when compared directly.

III. Average Interior Configuration; Lacks Competitiveness at This Price Point in the Domestic Market

Many had hoped the Audi cabin would offer surprises, but after the new car's debut, the best description is "unremarkable." The 11.9-inch instrument cluster paired with a 12.8-inch curved dual-screen central console is a design Audi has been using for a long time—familiar but lacking freshness.

The car features a stalk shifter, leaving storage space below the center console and retaining some physical buttons for easier blind operation while driving.

The interior makes extensive use of recycled and eco-friendly materials, along with a set of magnetic modular storage accessories that allow small items like cup holders to be freely rearranged and adjusted. While this is a nice detail, it does not justify a price tag approaching 300,000 RMB.

The configuration tiers are very distinct. L2-level advanced driver assistance, SONOS sound system, panoramic sunroof, HUD head-up display, and heated seats are all concentrated in the mid-to-high-end versions.

The entry-level version has a very basic configuration, lacking many comfort features.

When compared horizontally in the domestic market, its shortcomings become immediately apparent. At the same budget of 290,000 RMB, domestic electric vehicles typically offer full configurations as standard: advanced intelligent driving assistance, heated and ventilated seats, panoramic imaging, and high-quality sound systems are often included across all versions.

In contrast, the Audi A2 e-tron lacks standout features in terms of cabin hardware or intelligence levels, leaving the Audi logo as its biggest selling point.

Many online car enthusiasts have commented quite bluntly: this car is tailored specifically for Europeans as a commuter vehicle. If sold unchanged in the domestic market at this price point, it would struggle to appeal to ordinary consumers.

IV. Whether It Will Enter the Domestic Market Remains Uncertain

Audi has not released any official information about introducing this model to the domestic market. The starting price of 298,000 RMB mentioned is simply a conversion of the base price in Germany. If imported, additional costs such as tariffs and shipping would only increase the price.

The only potential turning point is domestic production. If produced locally in China and priced just above 200,000 RMB, it might attract some users who prefer exquisite (refined) compact electric vehicles, leveraging the Audi brand's appeal.

However, even with a price reduction, its inherent shortcomings remain: a compact body, conservative configuration, and average intelligence levels. Domestic car buyers generally prefer spacious interiors and fully equipped hardware, making this small luxury electric vehicle suitable only for a niche audience.

The A2 e-tron seems more like a city commuter electric vehicle tailored specifically for the European market. It excels in energy efficiency and is compact, easy to drive and park, but its configuration and cabin design are relatively conservative.

The luxury brand's aura remains, but in terms of hard power, it struggles to compete with domestic new energy vehicles in the same price range. The domestic electric vehicle market is already fiercely competitive in terms of configuration, space, and intelligent driving features. Relying solely on the brand logo and energy efficiency is unlikely to persuade ordinary family users to make a purchase.
