Introduction
From supply chains to product definition, joint ventures are advancing into Era 3.0.
At the end of August, the joint venture automotive market unveiled two pricing strategies that continue to spark public debate.
On August 21, at the Chengdu Motor Show, BMW announced the opening of reservations for the new-generation iX3, with a unified national starting price of RMB 269,900 for the entry-level model, matching the final market launch price. This figure is notably lower than industry expectations, which had pegged the entry-level price at a minimum of RMB 300,000.
A week later, on August 28, FAW-Volkswagen initiated pre-sales for the ID.AURA T6 in Hangzhou, starting at RMB 135,900. This mid-size, all-electric SUV, exceeding 4.8 meters in length, marks the first time a joint venture all-electric vehicle has entered the RMB 130,000 price range.
To grasp the impact of these two price points, one must consider the benchmarks.
The benchmark for the iX3 is its predecessor. The previous generation iX3, after localization, maintained a consistently high MSRP, with a 2024 variant reaching RMB 405,000. However, during end-of-lifecycle inventory clearance, its terminal price plummeted to around RMB 220,000, a nearly RMB 180,000 drop.
Why could a global model with unremarkable product strength command an official MSRP exceeding RMB 400,000? The answer does not lie in the vehicle itself. The product definition of the old iX3 originated in Munich, with development relying on a global platform. Component sourcing rights and cost structures were controlled by headquarters, dictating an inflated price that Chinese consumers rejected. This RMB 180,000 disparity is direct evidence of the global supply chain's failure in the Chinese market.
The ID.AURA T6's benchmark is the entire joint venture system. For decades, joint venture product pricing remained high, while performance and configurations lagged, constrained by foreign-imported platforms, architectures, and core components. Now, a German mid-size SUV has finally incorporated advanced intelligent driving hardware into a model priced below RMB 160,000.

These prices are not promotions, nor are they concessions. They reflect a single truth: the complete chain of joint venture brands, from product definition through R&D to the supply chain, is relocating from overseas to China en masse. This shift is not limited to German brands; Japanese and American joint ventures are also moving similar operations to China.
01 The High Costs Beyond Vehicle Manufacturing
Why were joint venture vehicles expensive? The answer was often simplified to brand premium. However, a breakdown of cost structures reveals that brand premium is only part of the equation, with significant costs hidden beyond manufacturing.
The most explicit cost is technology transfer fees. Joint venture contracts typically stipulate that foreign parties collect technology transfer or licensing fees as a percentage of model sales revenue, commonly ranging from 2% to 5%, payable regardless of profitability. This fee is levied upfront on each vehicle's selling price, without involvement in manufacturing or assumption of risk.
A more conceal (note: ' conceal ' is translated as 'concealed' in context below) cost lies in core components such as chassis platforms, engines, and transmissions, often supplied by foreign-owned factories in China or imported. When joint ventures purchase these from foreign parties, the prices already include R&D costs and profit margins, resulting in concealed profit transfers. A study citing a China Association of Automobile Manufacturers report indicates that technology transfer fees and key component costs combined can account for up to 14% of a vehicle's selling price.
Beyond this, the transnational (note: ' transnational ' is translated as 'cross-border' in context below) layout of supply chains adds costs. Media analysis of a Japanese joint venture's B-segment sedan revealed that powertrain components involved suppliers from 12 countries, with transmission control modules procured through three tiers—Bosch, Denso, and Delphi—resulting in core component costs 37% higher than those of autonomous brands. Each additional procurement tier and cross-border transaction adds layers of profit and tariffs.
R&D timelines also inflate prices. According to J.D. Power, joint venture brands average 46 months for new vehicle development, compared to 28 months for autonomous brands. Longer cycles increase amortization costs, and delayed launches mean products are outdated upon release.
Together, these factors clarify that a significant portion of joint venture vehicles' high costs stems from beyond manufacturing. Technology licensing fees, imported components, cross-border logistics, brand premium, and the invisible 'tax' of foreign headquarters' pricing power constitute four tollgates.
This high-cost chain is a direct product of the first two eras of the joint venture model.
In Era 1.0 (imported assembly), overseas mature models and complete parts kits were brought to China, with Chinese parties handling production and distribution. Even as domestic parts sourcing increased, it merely replicated overseas models' requirements. In Era 2.0, local procurement ratios rose sharply, but R&D and basic model frameworks remained restricted, with product definition rights locked at headquarters. Both eras shared a commonality: cost structures were foreign-dominated, leaving Chinese parties to optimize within fixed frameworks, unable to achieve true cost reductions. Most Japanese and American joint ventures remained stuck in this phase.
High MSRPs paired with steep terminal discounts were inevitable outcomes of this system. Manufacturers needed dignified official price lists to maintain brand image but had to concede margins in the actual market, with dealers absorbing the disparities. Consumers purchasing joint venture vehicles had to research market conditions for weeks before visiting dealerships.
By 2026, this approach had been squeezed dry. Joint venture and foreign brands' market share fell to 24.5% in June 2026, with mainstream joint venture brands' share dropping from 51% three years prior to under 25%. Autonomous brands' passenger vehicle market share stabilized above 68%, and industry-wide profit margins compressed to 4.1%. When survival is at stake, pricing models must change, and changing prices requires transforming the entire chain.
02 A Systemic Shift in Center of Gravity
The change in 2026 is that segments once predominantly overseas are now relocating to China segment by segment. This marks Joint Venture Era 3.0: local product definition, local development, and fully localized supply chains.
The first shift is in product definition rights. On September 3, Audi's Innovation & Technology Center officially launched in Shanghai, its first full-value-chain localization R&D entity in China and the German luxury brand's first intelligent electric technology center overseas. The significance of 'full value chain' lies in its ability to independently develop model platforms from scratch, rather than adapting designs from global headquarters.

This center focuses on the new-generation ADP platform, a smart digital platform developed specifically for the Chinese market, seamlessly integrating with China's mainstream digital ecosystems. SAIC Audi directly defines this as Joint Venture Era 3.0.
Volkswagen's approach differs slightly but aligns in direction. Volkswagen (China) Science and Technology Co., Ltd. in Hefei is Volkswagen's first center outside Germany with full vehicle R&D capabilities. Its full-process R&D and testing center, completed in November 2025, achieves end-to-end R&D closure, accelerating development cycles by approximately 30%. The CEA electronic architecture underlying the ID.AURA T6 is a product of this local R&D system, not a global architecture imported from Wolfsburg.
Japanese brands are also pivoting significantly. Toyota has implemented a China Chief Engineer system, empowering Chinese teams to lead model definitions. Nissan and Honda's new-generation electric products are spearheaded by Chinese teams, with intelligent driving and cockpit solutions integrated from local suppliers like Momenta and Huawei.
Once R&D rights shift inward, supply chain relocation becomes a natural consequence. With definition and development rights in Chinese teams' hands, they inevitably select the most responsive and cost-competitive suppliers. Tracing the ID.AURA T6's components reveals a near-complete roster of Chinese suppliers: intelligent driving chips and algorithms from local partners and joint ventures, voice technology from domestic firms, and batteries using local cells. In previous eras, such choices were unthinkable, as component sourcing rights were held by foreign headquarters, with transnational (cross-border) suppliers following headquarters' schedules and domestic firms relegated to peripheral roles.
BMW offers another perspective: even without fully ceding product definition rights, thorough supply chain localization can still reduce prices. The new-generation iX3's batteries are supplied by CATL and Eve Energy, its intelligent driving system is a China-customized solution co-developed with Momenta, and its cockpit AI engine is a BMW-Alibaba collaboration. Among American brands, SAIC-GM has ceded new model definition rights to its Chinese partner, with Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) leading architectures that directly serve global models. Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën's Chinese technical solutions are also beginning to reverse-integrate into Stellantis's global R&D system.
The most visible outcome of this chain relocation is that prices finally align with costs. ADP platform products debut with overall downward-shifted price ranges, while the CEA-based ID.AURA T6 pulls German mid-size all-electric SUVs into the RMB 100,000s.
Notably, the iX3 represents a price increase. The old model's terminal price once dipped to around RMB 220,000, making the new model approximately RMB 50,000 more expensive. Consumers accept this not because it is cheap, but because the pricing is transparent. With a unified national price, identical pre-order and launch pricing, and generational leaps in platform and charging capabilities, it abandons the strategy of inflated MSRPs followed by discounts, opting instead for clarity from the outset.
Pricing logic itself is evolving. Previously, joint venture vehicles used low-spec variants to pull down starting prices while profiting from options. Now, the trend reverses: entry models offer high specifications, with core features standard across all trims. Entry versions are no longer symbolic price advertisements.
Joint venture brands are not new to localization calls.
From 2015 to 2025, joint ventures similarly established R&D centers in China, touting 'rooted in China' slogans. However, observers dubbed this period a 'false dawn.' The most emblematic failure came from Mercedes-Benz, whose heavily invested EQ all-electric lineup, once seen as a flagship model, ultimately failed to hold its ground.
What changed? Previously, joint ventures engaged in superficial localization—lengthening axles, adjusting configurations, and swapping infotainment systems on imported models—while definition and development rights remained at headquarters, essentially staying in Era 2.0. Most Japanese and American joint ventures' efforts during that decade followed this pattern.
Such shallow localization could function in the internal combustion era through global platforms' scale effects but collapsed in the intelligent electric era. This round differs in that the entire chain—from product definition to platform development and component sourcing—is genuinely relocating to China.

However, time remains pressing for joint ventures. The consensus is that 2026–2028 represents the final strategic window for joint venture brands. Those failing to achieve triple transformations—intelligent localization, product electrification, and ecological synergy—will rapidly exit the market.
Industry calculations suggest 2028 as the critical window year, shaped by three overlapping structural time gaps: mass launches of joint ventures' native all-electric platforms will not occur until late 2028, leaving a product gap; autonomous brands will intensively roll out new native platform models during this period; and joint ventures lag by approximately 1.5 to 2 generations in intelligent driving iterations. Missing this node could further shrink joint ventures' new energy vehicle share.
The true litmus test is exports. Changan Mazda has elevated its Nanjing plant into Mazda's global new energy vehicle export hub, with the EZ-6 already exported to over 20 countries and regions, including Europe and Australia. Dongfeng and Nissan have established a dedicated import-export company with clear export targets. Yueda Kia's Yancheng plant exported over 80,000 units in H1 2026, shipping to 89 countries and regions. Audi Innovation & Technology Center's outcomes are also expected to feed back into global models. Meanwhile, SAIC-GM and Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën are leveraging foreign partners' global networks to export Chinese-made models overseas.
These moves signify that if products defined in China and supported by Chinese supply chains can only deliver value domestically, only survival needs are addressed. True success requires these vehicles—bearing foreign brands and Chinese supply chains—to gain acceptance on the streets of Munich, Tokyo, and Detroit. Only then will this round of relocation be deemed complete.
For current consumers, the landscape is straightforward. With the arrival of Joint Venture Era 3.0, while far from perfect, new joint venture models launched this year and beyond will finally offer comprehensive features and transparent pricing. When choosing a joint venture brand, consumers no longer need to rely on preemptive psychological reassurance that 'joint venture quality is more assured' to make purchasing decisions.
