On August 21, 2026, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a series of nine consecutive recall announcements.
Nine automotive manufacturers, including Tesla, Xiaomi, XPeng, Leapmotor, Geely (Zeekr), Dongfeng, Chery, BAIC BluePark, and China FAW Group, all filed recalls on the same day, cumulatively recalling more than 4.276 million vehicles.
This event represents the largest recall in Chinese automotive history prompted by a single issue.
The recall reason was strikingly similar across all cases: the emergency mechanical handles inside the vehicles were too similar in color to the interior trim, making them hard to identify and operate.
In the event of a severe collision causing the vehicle's low-voltage system to fail, occupants might be unable to swiftly locate the emergency handles to open the doors and escape. Meanwhile, external rescuers could also face difficulties if the electric exterior handles retract due to power loss.
In March 2026, Great Wall Motors Chairman Wei Jianjun stated bluntly during a livestream that hidden door handles are a pseudo-technology, reliant on electrical control and prone to failure, rendering doors inoperable.
He revealed that the decision to abandon hidden door handles triggered intense team discussions lasting seven months before a final decision was reached.
However, in the technology-driven new energy vehicle sector, hidden door handles have become almost a status symbol.
As of April 2025, roughly 60% of China's top 100 best-selling new energy models were equipped with hidden door handles.
How effective are automakers' claims that hidden door handles reduce drag and extend range?
Wei disclosed that hidden door handles improve a vehicle's drag coefficient by a maximum of just 0.1%, translating to a mere 1-2 kilometers of additional range for a 600-kilometer model—far less practical than optimizing tires or smoothing the chassis.
The trade-offs for these minimal gains are significant.
Per-unit cost: Traditional mechanical handles cost RMB 30-50, with simple structures requiring minimal maintenance. Hidden versions, however, require motors, sensors, and control modules, raising costs to RMB 200-400—5 to 10 times higher.
Weight increase: A hidden door handle system adds 8 kilograms to a vehicle's weight, offsetting any minor range benefits.
Maintenance costs: Repairs for standard models range from hundreds to thousands of yuan, but high-end versions can cost up to RMB 8,000 per incident—over 20 times that of traditional designs.
Hidden door handles rely on low-voltage electrical systems. In severe collisions causing power loss, electronic handles may become inoperable. Emergency interior handles, embedded in door panel gaps and matching interior colors, are nearly invisible under normal conditions.
C-IASI test data reveals that traditional mechanical handles can be mechanically opened after side collisions in 98% of cases.
However, fully hidden handles can only be mechanically opened post-collision in 19% of cases.
The gap from 98% to 19% stems not from mechanical durability but from the initial challenge of locating the handles.
Current automaker rectifications generally involve adding free warning labels near emergency mechanical handles and updating window control software via OTA to enable automatic window lowering after collisions.
Some models also require replacing improved mechanical handle covers.
On January 28, 2026, the mandatory national standard Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles (GB 48001—2026), formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, was approved by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China. It will take effect on January 1, 2027.
The new standard establishes three strict requirements:
Every door must be equipped with externally and internally accessible handles featuring mechanical release functions;
Exterior handles must reserve an operating space of no less than 60mm × 20mm × 25mm;
Doors must remain openable via mechanical release after collisions.
This means fully hidden door handle designs will be entirely phased out of new vehicle markets after 2027.
Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association, noted that this large-scale rectification does not stem from isolated quality failures by individual automakers.
Rather, it reflects a proactive industry-wide risk correction driven by the clash between the aesthetic-first design trends in new energy vehicles and the impending safety regulations.
