Only Three Traditional Fuel Models Make the Cut: A Review of SUV Sales in August

09/16 2026 359

Recently, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) unveiled retail sales figures for August. Focusing on the SUV segment, the trend towards new energy vehicles (NEVs) has accelerated, with NEV models securing the top seven positions in the top ten sales rankings for the month.

Among these, the Leapmotor A10 maintained its lead, selling 30,652 units and continuing to top the charts. The Model Y followed closely, narrowing the sales gap with the leader to just over a thousand units. The Titan 7 and Yuan UP ranked third and fourth, respectively, each with monthly sales exceeding 22,000 units. The Chang'an Qiyuan Q05, Li Auto i6, and Song Ultra took the fifth to seventh spots. Meanwhile, the number of traditional fuel vehicle models on the list rose to three, with the Corolla Cross, Boyue L, and RAV4 securing the final three positions in the top ten.

1st Place: Leapmotor A10 - 30,652 Units

In August, the Leapmotor A10 sold 30,652 units, securing the SUV sales crown for the second consecutive month and surpassing 30,000 units in a single month for the first time, marking a 16% month-over-month increase. The Leapmotor A10's sustained leadership can be attributed to its pricing and product features, which cater to the needs of ordinary families seeking spacious and highly intelligent vehicles. Additionally, its stable production and delivery rhythm, with the 100,000th mass-produced vehicle rolling off the line just 135 days after launch, ensure sufficient production capacity and timely deliveries for customers.

However, the Model Y, which closely trailed, also demonstrated strong growth momentum, selling 29,260 units in August, with a sales gap of just over a thousand units compared to the Leapmotor A10. The competition for the top spot remains fierce in the coming months.

2nd Place: Model Y - 29,260 Units

The Model Y sold 29,260 units in August, representing a 16.3% month-over-month increase, ranking second and narrowing the gap with the leader, the Leapmotor A10, to 1,392 units. Priced at 263,500 yuan, the Model Y is the only model in the top ten list to consistently remain above the 250,000 yuan mark. Achieving monthly sales of 29,000 units at this price point relies on its mature battery electric vehicle (BEV) system, solid chassis tuning, and intelligent driving assistance features. It attracts buyers not through excessive configuration but by excelling in the fundamentals, making it a worthwhile purchase for those willing to pay the price.

Moreover, the vehicle's pricing system has remained stable without significant fluctuations, coupled with normalized production capacity and delivery rhythms, making its continued sales growth unsurprising. Overall, the Model Y's growth momentum remains steady, and it continues to be a strong contender for the monthly sales crown in the future.

3rd Place: Titan 7 - 23,471 Units

In August, the Titan 7 sold 23,471 units, representing a 15.5% month-over-month increase, firmly holding the third spot in the SUV sales list with strong upward momentum. The Titan 7's stability in this position stems from its blend of rugged styling and family-oriented features. With a vehicle length of 4,999mm and a wheelbase of 2,920mm, along with a 70.9% space utilization rate, the rear seats and trunk offer ample space, and the boxy design does not compromise practicality.

Meanwhile, the EV Flash Charge version is equipped with BYD's second-generation Blade Battery, offering a range of up to 755km and charging from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes under normal temperatures. The DM Extended Range version further extends the pure electric range to 315km, with a combined range of 1,470km on a full tank and charge, allowing for daily commuting as an electric vehicle and long-distance travel without range anxiety. Since its launch, the Titan 7 has accumulated sales of over 200,000 units, consistently topping the boxy SUV sales charts for multiple months. The Fangchengbao brand's overall sales surged to 41,568 units in August, soaring by 155.6% year-over-year, with the Titan 7 being the absolute flagship. In the 200,000 yuan boxy SUV market, the Titan 7 faces limited competition.

4th Place: Yuan UP - 22,958 Units

The Yuan UP secured the fourth spot in the SUV list in August with 22,958 units sold, representing a 13.2% month-over-month increase, continuing its previous steady upward trend. The vehicle's manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) ranges from 74,800 to 119,800 yuan, with the entry-level model available for less than 80,000 yuan after terminal discounts, and the 401km Intelligent Driving Version Active model available for just over 80,000 yuan.

The Yuan UP's Blade Battery ensures safety, while its 5.25-meter turning radius makes it easy to maneuver and park in urban areas. The 401km range is sufficient for daily commuting, and users with home charging facilities can typically charge once a week, with electricity costs less than 0.1 yuan per kilometer. It is a vehicle without flashy gimmicks but excels in practicality. With stable production capacity and distribution channels, order deliveries remain consistent. Among the top ten list, the Yuan UP is one of BYD's most outstanding mainstay models, firmly established in the entry-level new energy SUV market segment.

5th Place: Chang'an Qiyuan Q05 - 17,349 Units

In August, the Chang'an Qiyuan Q05 sold 17,349 units, representing an 8.1% month-over-month decline, making it the only model in the top ten list to experience a month-over-month decrease. Although the model remains in the top ten, its momentum has clearly slowed. The Chang'an Qiyuan Q05's core strengths lie in its spaciousness, range, and pricing. The vehicle offers ample interior space to accommodate multi-member family travel, with a range sufficient for daily commuting and short trips, and fast-charging capabilities alleviating range anxiety.

Combined with a price that aligns with the public's budget, the Chang'an Qiyuan Q05 has accumulated a solid user base. Despite the slight sales decline this month, relying on its comprehensive product strength, the Chang'an Qiyuan Q05 continues to maintain a stable sales foundation, securing a place in the 100,000 yuan pure electric SUV market.

In Conclusion:

From the August SUV retail list, it is evident that new energy vehicle models continue to dominate the market, with the overall trend towards new energy vehicles persisting. Competition among top models is intensifying, with the battle for the sales crown between the Leapmotor A10 and Model Y set to continue in the coming market. In contrast, traditional fuel vehicle models can currently only hold onto three spots at the end of the top list, with their sales growth far below that of the leading new energy vehicle models. The once-dominant fuel SUV lineup has nearly completely exited the first tier. As new energy products continue to iterate and price competition intensifies, competition in the SUV segment will further increase. To maintain stable sales, subsequent models will need to continuously improve in terms of product strength, pricing, and delivery capabilities.
