Over 40,000 Orders Secured in a Single Week: Is the Xiaomi Pengcheng N70/N90’s Performance Merely Adequate?

Since Xiaomi unveiled the Pengcheng N70/N90, its popularity has come as no surprise.

After all, this vehicle is specifically tailored by Lei Jun for the middle-aged demographic. It boasts a spacious body, extended-range capabilities, roomy interiors, and flexible space configurations—features that resonate more with middle-aged consumers than with the younger crowd.

While the SU7 and YU7 appear to cater more to the younger generation, many loyal Mi fans have now entered middle age and are less inclined towards the SU7 and YU7 models, instead showing a preference for family-oriented vehicles.

Hence, the arrival of the Pengcheng was inevitable, and the N70 and N90 models naturally garnered significant attention from a vast number of middle-aged Mi fans upon their release.

Xiaomi officially disclosed that 10,000 orders were secured within just 4 minutes but has remained tight-lipped since. Some speculate that this silence is indicative of underwhelming sales performance and that the results are only marginally satisfactory, raising questions about why extensive information was shared for the SU7 and YU7.

In truth, for Xiaomi, the 4-minute order milestone is sufficient, and there is no pressing need to divulge more. Announcing an excessive number of orders could incite envy and jealousy from competitors, potentially leading to relentless smear campaigns. Maintaining a low profile and focusing on profitability is the prudent strategy.

So, what is the actual performance of the Xiaomi Pengcheng?

Recently, a blogger published a weekly report on the launch of the new Pengcheng N70 and N90 series, revealing that each store received an additional 80-100 new secured orders per week. Nationwide, the estimated total order volume for the first week is expected to range between 40,000 and 50,000 units.

Furthermore, another blogger reported that order data for Week 37 (September 7-13) indicated that Xiaomi Auto’s weekly order volume soared to 47,750 units, marking a 635% increase week-on-week, with approximately 40,000 orders attributed to the Xiaomi Pengcheng series.

Upon verifying these two datasets, their credibility appears to be high, suggesting that around 40,000 orders were secured in a single week.

Moreover, a blogger also disclosed the breakdown of reservations (pre-orders) for the Xiaomi Pengcheng models. The N90, the 7-seater variant, accounted for the largest share at 60%, followed by the N70 at around 25%, and the N90 Max Exploration version at approximately 15%.

The most popular exterior colors were Volcanic Gray and Obsidian Black, both darker hues, while the interior predominantly featured Sand Taomi (Sand Pottery Beige).

In terms of the age demographic of the reservation (pre-order) customers, they generally fall within the 30 to 45 age range, indeed older than the average age of around 30 for SU7 and YU7 customers. Most of these customers are married with children, serving as the primary household earners and focusing on upgrading or expanding their vehicle fleet, rather than being first-time car buyers.

Some media outlets predict that if the initial sales period for the Xiaomi Pengcheng extends until October 7, following the National Day holiday, the order volume could potentially surpass 120,000 units. The subsequent challenge will then lie in Xiaomi’s delivery capacity.

Optimistically, it is projected that by October, Xiaomi Auto could achieve monthly deliveries exceeding 60,000 units, with over 30,000 units for the SU7 and YU7 and over 30,000 units for the Pengcheng series. Whether this projection holds true remains to be seen, so let’s await the forthcoming data.
