Just in the past few days, Anthropic has made a significant splash.

On September 16, Anthropic announced the consolidation of Claude Cowork and Claude Chat into a single entry point, along with the introduction of two new products—Claude Docs and Claude Slides—and the official integration of Claude Design into the conversation interface.

In layman's terms, you can now draft documents, create PowerPoint presentations, and tackle design tasks directly within Claude, without fretting over which entry point to use for each task.

The rationale behind this consolidation is straightforward. Cowork, which was spun off from Claude Code in January this year, was envisioned as 'Claude Code for non-developers,' focusing on deep collaboration and long-term tasks.

However, Anthropic observed that users frequently struggled to decide whether a task belonged in Chat or Cowork, and that context built up in one product didn't always seamlessly transfer to another.

Rather than forcing users to make a choice, it was more efficient to merge them outright.

Post-merger, Claude can automatically discern whether a task necessitates a direct response or the invocation of more sophisticated agent capabilities.

You can submit a request like, 'Help me draft a weekly report and condense it into a 5-page management PowerPoint' before heading out. Whether you close your laptop or not, Claude continues to work in the cloud, so when you arrive at your desk, the document and slides are ready. And because they were generated in the same conversation, the data in the PowerPoint naturally aligns with the report.

Claude Docs enables users to collaborate on documents with AI, facilitating content selection for questions, comments, and revisions. Claude Slides manages the creation, editing, and presentation of slides, with the finished content playable directly within Claude or downloadable as PowerPoint or PDF files.

All three are currently in Beta, with Pro and Max users gaining first access, while the Enterprise version requires administrator activation.

The intention behind this move is clear: to transform the chatbox into an office gateway, elevating Claude from a 'Q&A bot' to an 'AI-native office suite.'

But Silicon Valley's AI office battleground extends well beyond Anthropic.

Microsoft: Copilot Cowork Goes Global

Microsoft is one of the pioneers and most assertive participants in this round of AI office competition. In March this year, Microsoft introduced Copilot Cowork within Microsoft 365, positioning it as an AI agent capable of autonomously executing multi-step tasks across applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

By June, Copilot Cowork had been fully deployed to all Microsoft 365 Copilot customers worldwide, moving beyond the preview stage.

More notably, multiple sources indicate that Microsoft's Copilot Cowork incorporates some capabilities from Anthropic's Claude Cowork.

In other words, while vying with Anthropic, Microsoft is also drawing inspiration from its rival's technological underpinnings. Currently, GPT-5.6 is the preferred model for Microsoft 365 Copilot in applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

This 'co-opetition' dynamic underscores that the AI office race has entered a phase of intense, close-quarters competition.

Google: Workspace Fully Embraces Gemini

Google's strategy is to integrate Gemini into every aspect of Workspace. Currently, Google Workspace subscriptions encompass the Gemini app, NotebookLM, and Gemini features across core applications like Gmail, Docs, and Meet.

In the Gmail sidebar, Gemini can draft emails, query email content, and summarize email threads. In Sheets, users can generate spreadsheet structures and formats using natural language prompts, with unstructured data automatically organized into standard tables.

Google also unveiled Gemini Spark at this year's I/O conference, a round-the-clock personal AI agent to assist users in managing various tasks in the digital realm.

The transition from 'AI-assisted tools' to 'AI agents' reflects Google's commitment to fully AI-ifying its core office suite.

OpenAI: ChatGPT Work Targets Enterprise Agents

OpenAI is also making strides. In July this year, OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT Work, an intelligent workflow automation tool for enterprise settings, supporting the generation of tables, presentations, dashboards, and web applications.

ChatGPT Work can integrate background information from team tools, transforming scattered notes and drafts into polished outputs. Users can also set goals, schedule recurring tasks, and request monitoring and updates.

Employees from companies like NVIDIA, Zapier, and RingCentral have participated in testing, with use cases including reviewing thousands of sales leads, checking new product launch readiness, and automating preparations for NVIDIA's GTC 2026 conference.

ChatGPT for PowerPoint is now also officially accessible to Business workspace users.

Amazon: Amazon Quick Makes a Stealthy Entrance

Amazon's approach to AI in the office is relatively understated but no less significant. Amazon Quick is an AI assistant for work scenarios, capable of connecting to files on your computer, emails (Outlook or Gmail), team chat tools (Slack or Teams), CRMs, and databases, taking actions on behalf of users.

The desktop version officially launched on macOS and Windows in April this year. AWS revealed that during a six-month internal trial with 200,000 employees, those who previously spent over 40 hours per month on data searches and document rewrites witnessed substantial efficiency gains after adopting Quick.

Meta, Notion, Zoom: Each Makes a Distinctive Move

Meta introduced its Mac AI assistant in August this year, supporting screen sharing and voice input, connecting to Google Workspace, automatically generating presentations, documents, and spreadsheets, and performing regular business tasks like auto-generating weekly performance reports.

Previously, Meta also officially unveiled Muse, a personal AI agent for both daily office work and integration with Meta's AI glasses.

Notion rolled out Custom Agents in February this year, supporting automated workflows triggered by schedules or preset conditions, capable of answering repetitive questions, categorizing tickets, and generating business status reports.

Notion aims to transform workspaces into 'AI agent collaboration hubs,' supporting multi-step automated workflows across databases.

Zoom's strategy commences with meetings. In June this year, Zoom launched the AI Productivity Suite, including Canvas, Slides, Sheets, and Paper, focusing on seamlessly transforming meeting conversations into tangible outputs like proposals and briefings.

ZoomMate, released concurrently, is an agentic AI work interface that automatically searches information, generates presentations, and executes actions in systems like Salesforce, Jira, Slack, and ServiceNow.

A Battle for the 'Gateway'

Connecting the dots, it's evident that Silicon Valley behemoths are fiercely competing over one thing in the AI office space: control over workflow gateways.

In recent years, AI in office scenarios has largely served as a 'plugin,' embedded wherever necessary.

But now, from Anthropic transforming the chatbox into an office gateway to Google embedding Gemini into every nook and cranny of Workspace, and Microsoft using Copilot Cowork to unify M365, the objective is remarkably consistent: to make AI your first port of call when commencing work, not just a tool you turn to afterward.

Anthropic's consolidation of Cowork and Chat, along with the launch of Docs and Slides, is essentially doing the same—unifying the 'gateway' so users don't need to ponder 'which tool to use for this task' but can simply articulate their needs and let AI decide and orchestrate.

This battle has only just commenced. Expect more product launches and feature iterations in the coming months.

For users, the silver lining is more choices; the downside is another round of learning curves.
