Samsung Unpacked Event Scheduled: Triple Launch of Foldable Phones, What's Next for AI?

Samsung continues to All in AI.

Earlier this year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24 series flagship smartphones at its first Galaxy Unpacked event in 2024, establishing the "Galaxy AI" slogan and establishing the image of "Samsung phones = AI phones" in the global market.

This simple brand image transformation alone has brought tremendous success to the Galaxy S24 series, surpassing its predecessor in both market reputation and sales. This has also increased expectations for Samsung's new moves in the AI field.

On June 26, Samsung Electronics released the poster for the second Galaxy Unpacked event of 2024, confirming that the global launch event will be held on July 10. The main protagonists of this event are naturally the Galaxy Z Fold 6 series and Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldable phones.

According to rumors, in addition to foldable phones, this event will also bring a variety of products including smart audio, smart wearables, smart health, and more. These new products will also come with numerous Galaxy AI features. It has to be said that since Samsung found a new direction, every launch event has received high attention from global consumers. So what surprises will this Galaxy Unpacked event bring us?

Triple Launch of Foldable Phones, The Arrival of the "Ultra" Version

The main protagonists of this event are naturally the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Let's start with the changes in the smaller foldable phone. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has almost no difference in design from its predecessor, the Z Flip 5. According to sources, the outer screen size of the former may increase slightly by 0.2 inches to 3.4 inches. However, compared to the aggressive 4-inch giant screens of Chinese brands, Samsung's strategy is still relatively conservative.

There will also be some improvements in the body material of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Specifically, it uses the same titanium metal frame and new generation protective glass as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but it is not yet clear whether this change will be applied to all versions.

In terms of performance, it is confirmed that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the world's first small foldable phone to be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform, offering 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage space. To complement the performance upgrade, Samsung has generously increased the battery capacity of the Z Flip 6 to 3700mAh, but the charging efficiency remains unchanged.

Another significant upgrade lies in the camera. The Z Flip 6 upgrades from the previous generation's 12MP main lens to a 50MP main lens, offering lossless 2x cropped zoom, while the ultra-wide-angle lens continues to use the same sensor as the previous generation.

Overall, the upgrade direction of the Z Flip 6 is to fill in gaps, increasing battery capacity, improving performance, complementing the shortcomings of the main camera, and adding the most fashionable titanium metal elements. For the already mature foldable phone series, such upgrades are within the acceptable range for the general public.

The changes to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 are even smaller, with the main upgrade being the upgrade to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform in terms of performance. However, Samsung has optimized the aspect ratio of the Galaxy Z Fold 6's outer screen, and it is highly likely to abandon the previous "remote control" aspect ratio that has been used for several generations.

It is not difficult to see that with the implementation of Galaxy AI, Samsung has also begun to attach importance to the comfort of interaction on the outer screen of large foldable phones. After all, most users' main usage scenarios are on the outer screen. If the slender aspect ratio is maintained, the displayable content area will be smaller.

Samsung has prepared an Ultra version for the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which comes with a titanium metal frame and a new generation of reinforced glass, and may also use the same anti-reflective coating as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The main camera will also be upgraded to a 200MP sensor. Relatively speaking, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra is more like a proper upgrade of Samsung's large foldable phone, and the gap between the two is quite obvious.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 series and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will perfectly inherit the Galaxy AI features that have been released previously, such as instant search, real-time translation, AI image expansion, and more. It is rumored that Google's Gemini Nano will also be gradually opened on mobile devices, and we can also expect to see Samsung AI applications with built-in Gemini Nano on this generation of Samsung foldable phones.

AI Wearables: Galaxy Ring Finally Arrives

Every summer's Galaxy Unpacked event always reserves a spot for Samsung's smart wearable product line, but this year's focus is not only on the iterative Galaxy Watch but also on the brand-new Galaxy Ring.

The overall design of the Galaxy Watch 7 does not change much from its predecessor, with the same circular dial, the same sapphire glass surface, and the same standard nylon woven strap. In terms of performance, the Galaxy Watch 7 will be equipped with the new Samsung Exynos W1000 processor, which uses a 3nm process technology and will have greater advantages in power consumption.

In terms of size, the Galaxy Watch 7 still offers two dial options of 40mm and 44mm, with the former having a battery capacity of 300mAh and the latter increasing to 425mAh. Since the Galaxy Watch 7 runs on Samsung's WearOS system, theoretically, its battery life will be much stronger than products like the Apple Watch.

To compete with the rumored Apple Watch X, Samsung will also launch a new product called the Galaxy Watch Ultra this year, which also uses the Exynos W1000 processor but differs in the design of the case. Both watches are equipped with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space, allowing for more music and photos to be stored offline.

Regarding AI features, according to leaks, Samsung will integrate a large number of AI functions into the new generation of smartwatches to help analyze users' performance in sports, health, and heart rate, providing customized suggestions. However, there is no definite news yet regarding AI features such as personalized dial definitions or real-time translation, and Samsung is unlikely to provide similar functionality in this generation.

The Galaxy Ring, which has been previewed and frequently seen at various exhibitions since the beginning of this year, will finally make its debut at this event. It is understood that it will offer 8 sizes, covering different finger widths from 5 to 12 inches. In terms of hardware configuration, the Galaxy Ring is equipped with several health sensors such as a heart rate sensor and a blood oxygen sensor. Combined with Galaxy AI, it will provide users with a "vitality evaluation" to help improve their sports and lifestyle.

Considering the "hard power" of the Galaxy Ring, some media speculate that its pricing may not be lower than $299, which is approximately 2100 yuan.

Samsung has successfully established its name in the mobile phone market with Galaxy AI, and consumers worldwide have already recognized Samsung's achievements in the AI field. Judging from the preview of Samsung's upcoming launch event, Samsung is also aiming to promote AI into the smart wearable market to build its own AI empire. However, there is still relatively little exploration of AI in the smart wearable field, so it remains to be seen whether Samsung can bring us even greater surprises.

Galaxy Buds 3: A Ticket to the AI Audio Market

This year, many audio manufacturers have integrated AI into their TWS product lines, such as Mobvoi, which launched the first large model in the audio field. One of Samsung's competitors, Nothing, is considering equipping its TWS headphones with an AI assistant, which may pose a significant challenge to Samsung, which has already laid out its AI product family in advance.

According to Tom's Guide, Samsung will release the Galaxy Buds 3 series at this Galaxy Unpacked event, equipped with Galaxy AI features that support real-time translation and AI voice assistants. Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro resemble the AirPods Pro in design, with touch-enabled earbud stems that allow for tapping operations and sliding to adjust volume.

The Galaxy Buds 3 series still supports active noise cancellation and IP57 dust and water resistance. It will also provide reasonable exercise suggestions in combination with the Watch 7 or Galaxy Ring, but more specific hardware configuration details have not been disclosed.

In fact, TWS earbuds have been seen by many emerging companies as the best complement to AI phones. Functions such as real-time translation and voice assistants can utilize AI algorithms provided by phones and combine with earbuds for content output. It is foreseeable that the design changes of the Galaxy Buds 3 series also take into account the need for users to use gestures when using some AI functions, hence the abandonment of the previous in-ear design.

Of course, there are different voices among users familiar with the Galaxy Buds series regarding the design changes. But regardless, if the previous design is maintained, it will be difficult to provide more gesture operations, which is not a good thing for Samsung's AI product line layout.

In terms of pricing, the Galaxy Buds 3 does not change much compared to its predecessor, while the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro will see a slight price increase of approximately $100, equivalent to about 700 yuan.

Galaxy Unpacked, a Samsung AI Festival

After Samsung released the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year, it gained market attention with the Galaxy AI slogan and achieved an overall sales growth of 8% in the first quarter of 2024. It is revealed that Samsung Electronics exceeded its production volume by about 20% in the first quarter of 2024, making it Samsung's best quarter in recent years.

Strictly speaking, the Galaxy S24 series did not make leapfrogging progress in design and performance. The most significant change compared to the previous generation was the addition of more AI features and support for Google's Gemini large model.

Riding on this AI wave, it is also evident that Samsung intends to continue playing the Galaxy AI card, gradually transitioning its consumer electronics products from intelligence to AI, further establishing Samsung AI's leading position in the global market.

As new members of the "AI phone" family, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are quite值得期待. Among them, large foldable phones are already recognized as one of the recognized mobile productivity tools. Combined with Samsung AI's rich functions such as instant search, AI article summaries, real-time translation, and more, they can fully utilize the advantages of foldable phones.

The new products in smart health and smart audio are also considered new directions for AI currently. Considering that Samsung is developing small-capacity AI chips, these new products may also be emerging markets that Samsung is targeting. Of course, the market appeal demonstrated by the highly anticipated Galaxy Ring is also a new direction that has burst out after many years of silence in the wearable market.

Overall, after this event, Samsung may become the first mobile phone brand in the global market to complete the layout of its AI family. However, how much market vitality these new products can stimulate depends on a combination of product innovation, functional creativity, and market pricing. At that time, Xiao Lei will also follow Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10 and witness Samsung's AI moment with everyone.
