After five years of growth, the foldable screen market, which has gradually reached saturation, has also witnessed a cooling trend. Some manufacturers have swiftly retreated, while others have persevered through numerous challenges and now hold over 70% of the market share.

According to the latest data from research firm IDC, in the fiercely competitive foldable screen market during Q2 of this year, Huawei not only secured the top spot but also attained a market share that was unattainable for its competitors, reaching a staggering 72.6%.

While Honor and vivo maintained their positions within the top three, neither of their market shares exceeded 10%. Xiaomi, bolstered by the launch of its new product, MIX Flip 2, rose to 5%. However, Samsung, a pioneer in foldable screens, has now found itself in the "Others" category.

Compared to the same period last year, when Huawei had not yet dominated half of the market, Honor and vivo could still occasionally compete with Huawei. For instance, during last year's 618 shopping festival, vivo's X Fold3 outsold Huawei's Mate X5.

On the other hand, OPPO held 8.4% of the market share, nearly twice the combined total of Xiaomi and Samsung.

From being a consistent leader to now dominating the market, how has Huawei achieved such a remarkable feat in just one year?

In my view, Huawei's commitment to exploring new form factors is a significant factor that sets it apart from its competitors. In recent years, while other manufacturers were still focused on reducing thickness, Huawei introduced two innovative concepts: triple-fold and wide-fold.

How many consumers have embraced these innovations? According to third-party data shared by blogger @DigitalGossipStation, as of week 28, the activation sales of Mate XT have reached over 480,000 units, while Pura X has performed even better, with sales approaching 570,000 units.

Furthermore, according to this blogger, Huawei will not only continue to focus on large-format foldables, with a major iteration in the form of Mate X7, but it has also begun internally evaluating foldable tablets.

With such a profound presence in the foldable market, it is only a matter of time before Huawei secures 80% of the market share.
