Introduction
The new cars at this year's Chengdu Auto Show are few but high-quality.
As we approach the end of summer, the annual Chengdu Auto Show is right around the corner. Compared to the biennial Beijing and Shanghai Auto Shows, as well as the Guangzhou Auto Show that marks the end of each year, the Chengdu Auto Show seems to hold a unique significance. It's not just a showcase; it's more like a sales venue. Regardless of whether it's a grand event, it's crucial.
However, as competition in China's automotive market intensifies, automakers' strategies have become increasingly unpredictable, and auto shows no longer seem to be the mainstay of promotion, making their status more delicate. This is especially true for the Chengdu Auto Show, where new car launches have been sporadic before and after the show, but not so much on media day itself.
This is evident from the scheduling of media events. Hence, some say the influence of auto shows is declining.
In reality, while many automakers choose to avoid launching new cars at the Chengdu Auto Show, there are still many all-new models making their debut or officially launching at the event, each with remarkable capabilities. Overall, the number of new car launches at this year's Chengdu Auto Show may be lower than expected, but the quality remains worth anticipating. Ignoring them would surely be a regret.
BMW X3 Long Wheelbase: The Charm of Extra Space
The all-new BMW X3 has officially launched in overseas markets, and not long ago, the domestically produced version also appeared on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's new car list. According to the information, the domestically produced BMW X3 will feature a lengthened wheelbase, increasing by 110mm to 2,975mm, matching even the standard wheelbase BMW X5. Along with the extended wheelbase, the all-new BMW X3 Long Wheelbase boasts a class-leading length of 4,865mm and a class-leading width of 1,920mm, exuding an unprecedented sense of size and grandeur.
Undoubtedly, the extended wheelbase will further enhance the market competitiveness of the all-new BMW X3, especially considering that the Audi Q5L and Mercedes-Benz GLC Long Wheelbase versions have been on the market for some time, and BMW is the last among the BBA trio to introduce a long-wheelbase model in the mid-size SUV segment. As consumer demand for space continues to grow, BMW has taken note of this market trend and proactively made changes. The increased dimensions of the all-new X3 Long Wheelbase significantly expand rear passenger space, with thicker and longer rear seats, providing a more comfortable and spacious ride. Additionally, the all-new X3 adopts a newly upgraded interior design, making this new model even more anticipated.
BMW M5: The Madness of a New Energy Performance Car
The all-new BMW M5, codenamed G90, made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and it will also make its domestic debut at the Chengdu Auto Show. As a replacement model, the new M5 adopts the latest family design language, featuring a classic kidney grille paired with illuminated contours and an M badge, making it highly recognizable. Notably, compared to the previous-generation M5, the body width has increased by 67mm, and the ground clearance has been lowered by 18mm. At the rear, the car retains the overall styling of the current 5 Series, but the dual quad-tip exhaust layout and exaggerated diffuser give it an aggressive look.
As the high-performance version of the 5 Series, the M5 has always prioritized speed and handling, and this time, it adopts new energy technology for the first time, featuring a plug-in hybrid system combining a 4.4T V8 engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined power output of 727 horsepower and a combined torque of 1,000 Nm. Paired with an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, it achieves a 0-96km/h acceleration time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 306km/h with the optional M Driver Package. The 4.4T engine produces a maximum power of 585 horsepower, while the electric motor contributes 197 horsepower. The battery pack has a capacity of 14.8kWh, providing an all-electric range of 40km. While its performance is impressive, the addition of the electric motor and battery significantly increases the vehicle's weight, with a curb weight of 2,435kg in European specifications, giving it a somewhat “brute force” feel. This raises questions about the future direction of performance cars, but regardless, it represents the pinnacle of performance in today's era.
BYD Dolphin 06GT: The Arrival of the Pure Electric Hot Hatch
The Dolphin 06GT is derived from the OCEAN-M concept car and was previously named Dolphin X on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's new car list. As the Chengdu Auto Show approaches, BYD has officially announced the name of this model, which will make its debut at the show. The Dolphin 06GT is a brand-new pure electric hatchback, similar in positioning to the Volkswagen Golf but with a longer wheelbase. Its dimensions are 4630/1880/1490mm, with a wheelbase of 2,820mm, and its high wheelbase-to-length ratio translates to ample interior space. Officially positioned as “the first GT for young people,” the Dolphin 06GT aims to appeal to younger consumers.
Notably, the Dolphin 06GT will be an electric hot hatch, and BYD offers a dual-motor version for this model, with front and rear motor power ratings of 110kW and 200kW, respectively, generating much anticipation for its performance. For those who don't prioritize performance, a single-motor version is also available. While new models in the new energy market are emerging continuously, there aren't many options in the traditional two-box pure electric sedan segment. Although the two-box sedan market is relatively small, it can still be considered a blue ocean market. Moreover, with dimensions approaching those of a B-segment sedan, the Dolphin 06GT meets consumers' stringent demands for versatility.
BYD Tang MAX: Charging into the 200,000-yuan MPV Market
Information about the Tang MAX is still scarce, but recent spy shots of the vehicle undergoing road tests have been frequently shared online, suggesting that it will officially debut at the Chengdu Auto Show. Judging from the spy shots, the vehicle's dimensions are impressive, and it is expected to be a mid-to-large MPV. BYD has not released the official name of this model, but based on the exposed tail badge, it is likely to be named Tang MAX.
In terms of power, the vehicle is expected to be equipped with BYD's latest fifth-generation DM technology, offering a comprehensive driving range exceeding 1,200km and excellent fuel economy. Thanks to the success of the Denza D9, BYD has gained significant influence in the MPV market. However, there is still a gap in the 200,000-yuan segment. The launch of the new Tang MAX MPV will further expand BYD's MPV lineup and challenge joint venture MPV models such as the Odyssey and Elgrand in the 200,000-yuan segment. What new highlights this vehicle will bring will gradually unfold as the Chengdu Auto Show kicks off.
AITO M7: A Make-or-Break Moment
The AITO M7 will officially debut at the Chengdu Auto Show, marking a crucial product for the AITO brand. Both extended-range and pure electric versions will be unveiled simultaneously. Visually, the M7 inherits the family design language, based on the AVATR Design Concept 2.0, presenting a premium and elegant body with sleek lines and a futuristic front fascia. In terms of dimensions, the AITO M7 is positioned as a mid-size SUV with a wheelbase of 2,940mm, 20mm longer than its direct competitor, the Li Auto L6. Notably, unlike the previous two models, the AITO M7 will offer an optional “engine” for the first time, available in both extended-range plug-in hybrid and pure electric versions.
From a broader new energy market perspective, the growth rate of pure electric vehicles has significantly slowed, while the plug-in hybrid market, including both PHEV and REEV, has exhibited unprecedented prosperity. Consequently, more and more new energy automakers are considering a “two-pronged approach.” The AITO M7 will be the brand's first model to offer an extended-range plug-in hybrid, and its design departs from the unique styles of the AITO 11 and 12, adopting a more conventional size with a regular tailgate and rear window, better aligning with mainstream market demands. Positioned lower than the previous two models, the M7 is expected to become the sales driver for the brand.
Deep Blue S05: Further Expanding the Product Lineup
The Deep Blue S05 continues the design language of the Deep Blue family, featuring a technologically advanced, stylish, and dynamic overall appearance. The front face adopts a closed design, with slender headlights on both sides and High and low beam light group equipped in the front bumper, complemented by triangular panels and a trapezoidal air intake below, creating a sense of hierarchy. Although positioned as a compact SUV, the Deep Blue S05 boasts dimensions of 4620/1900/1600mm and a wheelbase of 2,880mm, almost matching those of a mid-size SUV, promising impressive interior space.
In terms of power, the Deep Blue S05 will continue to offer both pure electric and extended-range options. The Deep Blue Super Extended Range technology has proven its worth in the market, and thanks to this technology, the Deep Blue S7 and SL03 have also received positive feedback. Notably, the S7 and SL03 have been renamed S07 and L07, respectively, aligning with the naming convention of the new S05 model. The new S05 is expected to launch in the third quarter of this year, further expanding the Deep Blue product lineup and positioning itself even lower than the S07, hinting at a more competitive price point.
MINI ACEMAN: The Sales Driver for Beam Auto
Over a month ago, MINI's first pure electric model and Beam Auto's first domestically produced vehicle, the pure electric MINI COOPER, officially launched. This compact and refined pure electric car continues MINI's traditional style but its three-door design somewhat limits its practicality for family use. At the upcoming Chengdu Auto Show, MINI's second pure electric model, the ACEMAN, will make its debut. Positioned as a blend of the five-door MINI and MINI COUNTRYMAN, the ACEMAN is a pure electric compact SUV, expected to appeal to more family users due to its practicality.
The new car measures 4076/1754/1515mm in length, width, and height, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2,606mm. Available in two versions, the ACEMAN and ACEMAN S, they are equipped with 135kW and 160kW single motors, respectively, differentiating their performance capabilities. Interior-wise, the design aesthetic carries on from the pure electric MINI COOPER, including its iconic circular screen. As a competitor to MINI, smart, under Geely's management, has accelerated its electrification transformation, with the #1 and #3 models already on the market and subsequent models in the pipeline. Now that MINI's two pure electric models are finally here, facing the competitive pressure in China's new energy market poses challenges for both the MINI brand and Beam Auto, the joint venture company.
NIO S Wagon: Making Wagons Trendy
On the eve of the Chengdu Auto Show, the NIO S Wagon officially launched, offering six versions, including pure electric and extended-range models, priced between 159,900 and 209,900 yuan. Notably, the extended-range version is equipped with a large 43.88kWh battery, providing a pure electric driving range of up to 300km, further expanding the vehicle's usage scenarios. Based on the NIO S sports sedan, the Wagon version features some adjustments to its exterior design, retaining the original front fascia but featuring a flatter and longer roofline, extending into a roof-mounted spoiler, pushing the vehicle's center of gravity rearward and creating a classic wagon proportion. In terms of dimensions, the Wagon version is 30mm taller than the standard NIO S but shares the same 2,980mm wheelbase.
In the era of gasoline-powered vehicles, wagons have always been a niche market. Manufacturers like BBA, Volvo, and Volkswagen offered a rich selection of wagon models, but sales performance was underwhelming. However, in the pure electric sedan market, the emergence of models like the Zeekr 001 and NIO ET5T has drawn the attention of many automakers to this segment, with the NIO S Wagon being one of the newcomers. Looking at the overall wagon market, apart from the Zeekr 001, which only offers a wagon body style, sales of wagon models from other brands lag far behind their sedan counterparts within the same lineup. This suggests that the popularity of wagon models still needs to be boosted. With its sincere pricing, the NIO S Wagon's ultimate performance will depend on the market's acceptance of wagons.
ZEEKR 7X: New Benchmark for Pure Electric SUVs
ZEEKR's first family SUV, named 7X, is still based on the SEA Grand Architecture and boasts of offering the "ultimate ZEEKR experience." After much anticipation, it will officially debut at the Chengdu Auto Show. With dimensions of 4825/1930/1656 (1666) mm and a wheelbase of 2,925 mm, the new vehicle is positioned as a mid-to-large SUV. Aesthetically, the ZEEKR 7X adopts a similar Hidden Energy concept to the 007, featuring designs like the "integrated smart light curtain" and "floating Flowing light taillights." The lidar mounted on the roof hints at its advanced autonomous driving capabilities.
Given that ZEEKR's first SUV, the ZEEKR X, did not make a significant impact on the SUV market, ZEEKR urgently needs a more mainstream SUV to expand its market base. The ZEEKR 7X embodies this mission. Additionally, the 7X introduces a new naming convention, with "X" representing the SUV series and "7" indicating its position within the SEA Grand Architecture lineup. The new vehicle's spacious five-seat layout and futuristic design are expected to appeal to younger consumers, potentially making it a star among pure electric SUVs at the Chengdu Auto Show.
Volkswagen Passat Pro: A Crucial Transformation
The all-new Magotan was launched on July 9 and has received a positive market response. Its sister model, the all-new Passat, will also make its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show. Unlike the wagon-only version available overseas, the Passat B9 in China features a unique three-box design with an extended wheelbase. Visually, the new Passat retains the European design language, deviating from the current model's conservative aesthetic. Notably, the new Passat exceeds 5 meters in length, measuring 5,006 mm, making it the longest Passat ever, while maintaining a wheelbase of 2,871 mm.
SAIC Volkswagen has appended the suffix 'Pro' to the all-new Passat, suggesting that it may coexist in the market with the current model. The new generation targets a younger demographic, complementing the current model's conservative design and offering consumers more choices. Powering the new Passat is a 1.5T engine replacing the previous 1.4T, while the 2.0T engine remains available. The interior boasts significant upgrades, including a smarter infotainment system, shedding the image of an "old-fashioned gasoline car" in terms of technology and intelligence. Pricing will be crucial in determining its market performance.
Hyundai Santa Fe: Beijing Hyundai's Hope
The all-new Santa Fe, flagship of Beijing Hyundai's SUV lineup, made its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show and will launch at the Chengdu Auto Show. After five iterations, the Santa Fe has sold over 5.7 million units globally. The fifth-generation model arrives with a distinctive "square box" design and spacious, comfortable interior, catering to consumers' pursuit of quality living.
The all-new Santa Fe adopts the Open for More design philosophy, breaking away from its previous image with a more fashionable and rugged look. Narrow grille slats and a central light strip enhance the vehicle's visual hierarchy. The vertical tailgate adds a crossover touch. Amid challenges facing Korean brands in China, Beijing Hyundai aims to revitalize its portfolio with the all-new Sonata and Santa Fe. These two flagships embody Beijing Hyundai's new hope, with the Santa Fe playing a pivotal role.
Cadillac XT5: Still Relevant?
Cadillac announced the all-new XT5's debut at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 30. As a generational update, the XT5 receives comprehensive upgrades to its exterior, interior, and overall quality, exuding a heightened sense of luxury and technology. Its new family-style front fascia retains the iconic shield grille and T-shaped headlights, enhanced by horizontal and vertical lighting elements. At 4888/1957/1694 (1698) mm and a wheelbase of 2,863 mm, the XT5 is notably larger than its predecessor.
The interior transformation is even more pronounced, with a 33-inch 9K curved ultrahigh-definition screen dominating the center console, offering unparalleled visual impact and functionality. The steering wheel adopts a sportier, younger design, while the gearshift lever moves to the column for easier access. The center console features dual-layer storage compartments. Powering the XT5 is a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine (LXH), available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. As second-tier luxury brands struggle in China, especially with Cadillac facing delays in introducing new energy vehicles, the XT5's market pressure is considerable, posing significant challenges ahead.
