According to the media on September 4, as the Japanese government significantly increases its support for the semiconductor industry, many technology giants have turned their attention to Japan and chosen to establish high-end research centers and production bases in Japan to seize the commanding heights of future technology.
Previously, NVIDIA had announced a collaboration with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), a leading Japanese research institution, to jointly develop a future-oriented quantum computing system. This system aims to seamlessly integrate into cutting-edge quantum hardware, marking a new phase in the deep cooperation between the two parties in the field of quantum technology.
Now, AIST is once again stepping up its efforts, this time partnering with another giant in the semiconductor industry: Intel. The two parties plan to jointly build a new R&D center focused on advanced chip manufacturing technology, with a particular emphasis on in-depth research and development of EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography technology. It is expected to be officially operational within the next 3 to 5 years.
The R&D center is expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars. It not only provides valuable opportunities for Japanese companies to work alongside Intel and AIST to explore the boundless possibilities of EUV lithography technology, conducting prototype design and testing, but also significantly reduces the reliance of Japanese chip design companies on overseas resources, accelerating the pace of local innovation.
It is worth noting that Japanese companies play a pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain, particularly in several key areas of EUV technology, where they hold a significant market share and influence that cannot be ignored.
