Global 5G standard essential patent ranking: Huawei leads by a wide margin, Xiaomi grows fastest to become top three domestic players

On September 27, Kuaijike Technology reported that the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) released the "Research Report on Global 5G Standard Essential Patents and Standard Proposals (2024)", disclosing the global ranking of 5G standard essential patents in 2024.

Overall, Chinese companies have a significant advantage, with five Chinese companies ranking among the top ten in the global standard essential patent list, occupying half of the list. Huawei, ZTE, and Xiaomi are the top three domestic players in 5G patents.

Among them, Huawei ranks first with a share of 12.42%, far ahead of Qualcomm, the second-ranked company, with a gap even close to Datang's 3.78% share, which ranks tenth.

ZTE ranks fifth with a share of 6.97%, and Xiaomi ranks eighth with a share of 4.62%, up two places from last year's debut at tenth place, making it the fastest-growing Chinese company in this ranking.

Due to the inheritance and similarity of mobile communication technologies, the same patent may be simultaneously applied by companies for different generations of standards such as 2G/3G/4G/5G. Only "5G-only patent families" that are declared as essential to the 5G standard are considered as innovations specifically targeted at new 5G technologies.

In terms of 5G-only patent families, Huawei's share is 13.03%, further expanding its leading position. Xiaomi's share has also increased, narrowing the gap with communication giant Nokia to less than 0.3%.

Xiaomi's rapid growth in the past two years is mainly attributed to significant R&D investments. Xiaomi established its 5G pre-research team as early as the end of 2015 and has continued to delve into 5G technology innovation.

According to previously released data by Xiaomi, its R&D investment reached 10.7 billion yuan in the first half of 2024, and is expected to reach 24 billion yuan for the full year. Xiaomi announced in 2023 that its R&D investment will exceed 100 billion yuan in the next five years.

As of the end of 2023, Xiaomi's technology research and development has expanded into 12 technical fields, including 5G mobile communication technology, big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, covering 99 specific areas in total.

While vigorously investing in underlying technology research and development, Xiaomi attaches great importance to intellectual property protection. As of June 30, 2024, Xiaomi has obtained over 40,000 patent authorizations worldwide and has over 32,000 patents pending global examination.
