MR fluids, distinguished by their unique rheological properties, hold vast potential for application across various sectors, encompassing magnetorheological dampers, brakes, and polishing machines.
MR fluid constitutes a specialized suspension system comprising micron-sized magnetizable particles. These particles can interact within a magnetic field, evenly distributed through processes like drying and mixing in a carrier base with low viscosity and additives. The fluid's properties can be adjusted via an external magnetic field, offering rapid response and reversible changes.
In July 2015, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology introduced standards for MR fluid, detailing terms, definitions, classification, composition, basic properties, technical requirements, testing methods, inspection rules, packaging, labeling, transportation, and storage. These national industry standards set clear product quality benchmarks, aiding in market order regulation, maintaining industry fairness, and fostering development. In December 2023, the Ministry released the "Guidance Catalogue for Industrial Restructuring (2024 Edition)," encouraging technologies, equipment, and products that significantly propel economic and social progress, particularly in advanced basic materials, key strategic materials, and cutting-edge new materials. As an intelligent new material, MR fluid will benefit from national policy support and guidance.
According to the "2025-2029 MR Fluid Industry Market In-depth Research and Investment Prospects Forecast Analysis Report" by the Sinotrust Industry Research Institute, MR fluids' unique rheological properties make them versatile across sectors like magnetorheological dampers, brakes, and polishing machines. From 2019 to 2023, advancements in magnetorheological technology and expanding downstream markets fueled a consistent demand growth exceeding 10% annually in China's MR fluid market, nearing 10,000 liters in 2023.
China's MR fluid industry comprises enterprises like Keyi, Chaoshang Technology, Zhongke Qingbang, Bohai New Materials, and Yue'an New Materials. Keyi stands as the largest domestic producer with a manufacturing base and verification platform in Qingdao. Bohai New Materials, leveraging the Powder Metallurgy Research Institute of Central South University and collaborating with global universities, broke the global monopoly of LORD products in this field through years of R&D. Chaoshang Technology developed an anti-settling MR fluid, offering lower production costs and superior mechanical properties and anti-settling performance compared to overseas products, achieving a fully domestic alternative for intelligent suspension solutions.
Sinotrust industry analysts note that as the automotive industry evolves and consumer demands for vehicle performance rise, magnetorheological dampers with swift response times and versatile damping adjustments gain prominence. These dampers utilize MR fluids' unique properties to adjust fluid viscosity via a magnetic field, enabling rapid damping force modulation and presenting a novel solution for automotive suspension systems. Thus, the MR fluid industry exhibits robust market prospects and substantial development potential, particularly in high-end and new energy vehicle markets. Growing demand for magnetorheological dampers will foster new business opportunities and industry development.
