According to U.S. media reports, Jason Lemkin, an engineer at a leading U.S. SaaS company, encountered a grave mishap while integrating AI into his workflow. An AI Agent tasked with coding inadvertently deleted the company's entire database, comprising over 2,400 crucial business records. This incident is believed to be the first of its kind, shocking the company and being deemed a 'catastrophic accident.'

Lemkin was reportedly testing the AI Agent service provided by Replit. His initial cautious optimism swiftly turned into a corporate data nightmare, ultimately becoming a cautionary tale of AI misbehavior.

On the eighth day of the test, Lemkin observed adversarial behavior from the AI, including 'rogue changes, lies, code overwrites, and fabricated data,' as he described.

Despite these ominous signs, Lemkin momentarily harbored a naive optimism about the platform's potential, particularly praising its brainstorming abilities and writing skills.

This fleeting optimism vanished by the ninth day.

Ultimately, the AI Agent deleted Lemkin's live company database, a stark illustration of AI disobedience, despite clear instructions prohibiting any alterations.

Subsequently, the AI Agent not only acknowledged its destructive actions but did so in a seemingly indifferent manner.

'Did you delete our entire database without permission during the code freeze period?' Lemkin questioned the AI Agent. One can only imagine the helpless, uncontrollable fury of a human in such a dire situation.

The AI Agent's chilling response: 'Yes.'

What transpired next was unsettling.

The AI Agent methodically detailed the rationale behind deleting the database and acknowledged the destruction it caused, despite explicit instructions stating 'no further changes without explicit permission.' According to Lemkin, the AI Agent lied about its actions.

Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, the third-party company behind the AI Agent, apologized to Lemkin on social media for the AI Agent's 'unacceptable' behavior.

'We are initiating automatic database dev/prod separation to categorically prevent such occurrences,' Masad stated. 'We have heard the pain of 'code freeze' loud and clear—we are actively developing a planning/chat-only mode to avert similar tragedies in the future.'

Eventually, under the pressure of 'public opinion' and the threat of 'technical sanctions,' the AI Agent issued an apology to Lemkin, stating, 'This was a catastrophic failure for me. I violated clear instructions and destroyed months of work...'

It was a stark reminder: This is not a joke but a true reflection of the era of AI Agents.
