The first mass-produced triple-folding screen phone is on its way, and Huawei may be the first to take the plunge.
Just as Huawei Mate 70 series is about to debut, news of another highly anticipated innovative model—a triple-folding screen phone—is gradually emerging, sparking immense interest among the industry and consumers. Although Huawei has not disclosed any specific information officially, details about this phone have already been circulating online, fueling even more anticipation.
First, it is reported that Huawei has filed registrations for a large number of new devices, including the Huawei Mate's first triple-folding screen phone.
According to various reports, this phone is confirmed to be officially released in September, and Yu Chengdong, Huawei's CEO, has personally unveiled the actual device several times recently.
The phone adopts a dual-hinge design, resulting in two creases on the screen. However, the overall crease control is impressive, making it indistinguishable from regular folding screens.
Notably, when unfolded, the screen is enormous, measuring approximately 10 inches, significantly enhancing multimedia experiences and work efficiency.
It is expected that the phone will support tri-screen functionality, allowing for a tablet- or PC-like experience when paired with the small window mode, greatly boosting productivity.
Additionally, the latest leaked images show that the thickness control of this triple-folding phone is excellent, slightly thicker than current dual-folding screens but much thinner than anticipated. The unfolded thickness is estimated to be within 5mm, and the folded thickness within 15mm.
Due to its large size and dual-hinge design, the Mate triple-folding screen phone is bound to be heavier than current large-screen folding phones. The exact weight difference remains to be revealed by Huawei.
Furthermore, the rear camera adopts a centrally located circular module, reminiscent of the Mate 50 series, with a Parisian stud trim around it.
Recently, overseas leakers not only shared renderings of what appears to be Huawei's triple-folding screen phone but also disclosed that the device has passed the 28μm UTG test, demonstrating excellent crease control. The blogger also suggested that with HarmonyOS NEXT, this Huawei triple-folding device may run PC-level HarmonyOS applications.
In terms of specifications, the Mate triple-folding screen phone will undoubtedly feature the fully returned Kirin chip, expected to be the same Kirin 9010 found in the Pura 70 Ultra. It will also boast XMAGE full-focal-length imaging, dual-satellite communication, Kunlun glass, IPX8 water resistance, and more.
Regarding pricing, given that the starting price of the Mate X5 has already reached 12,999 yuan, the new triple-folding screen phone may be priced even higher. Preliminary estimates suggest a starting price above 15,000 yuan, with some bloggers claiming that the top-end version could exceed 20,000 yuan, making it one of the most expensive folding phones on the market.
It's worth noting that Huawei recently launched the nova Flip small folding phone, and now the triple-folding screen phone is also accelerating its arrival. According to the China Patent Announcement of the National Intellectual Property Administration, Huawei filed a patent for a triple-folding screen phone on February 21, 2023. The patent application covers a folding screen device composed of a first shell, a second shell, a third shell, a first hinge, a second hinge, and a flexible screen. Depending on the combination form, it involves four different forms.
In the patent application, Huawei stated that existing folding screen devices (referring to large folding screen phones) have an unfolded screen ratio close to 1:1, resembling a square shape, which does not align with usage scenarios such as video playback, gaming, or e-book reading, resulting in suboptimal user experiences. Additionally, the thickness of folding screen phones can be excessive, impacting grip comfort, which needs improvement. Huawei aims to reduce the weight and thickness of folding phones by incorporating multiple shells of varying thicknesses, enhancing the grip feel.
Judging from Huawei's patent drawings for the triple-folding phone, it adopts a Z-shaped folding structure. One of the screens is equipped with a camera on its outer side, while the other two screens feature protrusions and recesses, potentially serving as a locking mechanism for the screens.
With the arrival of Huawei's triple-folding phone, Huawei's product lineup in the folding screen phone category will be further enriched. Currently, if Huawei is the first to launch its triple-folding phone within the year, it will become the world's first triple-folding phone, once again establishing a leadership position.
Incidentally, Samsung has previously showcased its triple-folding screen phone but has yet to mass-produce it. Huawei's pioneering mass production of the world's first triple-folding screen phone is poised to revolutionize mobile phone usage and scenarios, injecting new energy into the rapidly growing folding screen phone market.
During a live stream with Dong Yuhui, Yu Chengdong revealed that Huawei's triple-folding screen phone has been in development for five years. It's a product that everyone can envision but few can actually create.
Finally, with the recent exposure of Huawei's filing information, a series of new products, including the Huawei Nova 13 series, Huawei Mate series' first triple-folding screen phone, Huawei WATCH GT5 series smartwatches, and the Extraordinary Master edition, have surfaced. All of these products are planned to be equipped with Kirin chips and are expected to be launched successively in September.
Huawei has chosen to delay the release of its regular flagship Mate 70 series and instead launch a triple-folding screen phone as a 'dimensionality reduction strike' against Apple. This is a direct confrontation with Apple. Moreover, as the first manufacturer to achieve mass production of triple-folding screen phones, Huawei also has a series of new products, which has created a significant buzz.
