Following Qualcomm's unveiling of the Snapdragon 8 Supreme Edition, the most powerful mobile chip in history, last year, it came as no surprise that Xiaomi's 15 series globally premiered this chip. This trend is anticipated to persist for the next few years. While various companies have taken action, several leading manufacturers have yet to reveal their final hand. Whether in response to last year's chip premiere or not, Xiaomi intends to strike first when it comes to unveiling its flagship. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is taking shape, and even Lei Jun, who no longer oversees the mobile phone business, personally stoked anticipation, emphasizing the phone's significance within Xiaomi.
Furthermore, official reservations for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra have commenced, signaling its imminent release. Yesterday, Lei Jun hinted at a late-month unveiling. Based on last year's 14 Ultra release timing, I personally speculate that the 15 Ultra will likely debut on February 22. One certainty from the official page is Xiaomi's continued collaboration with Leica in imaging, confirming that the 15 Ultra will feature a rear Leica quad-camera setup.
Imaging prowess happens to be the highlight of the 15 Ultra's upgrades. The primary camera retains its 50-megapixel sensor, employing the current top-tier LYT-900 sensor. Other parameters may see minor enhancements. The periscope telephoto lens is a standout, upgraded to 200 million pixels, supporting 100X AI fusion zoom. Even for ultra-long-distance shots, it delivers crisp, detailed images, rivaling some professional cameras. Coupled with two additional 50-megapixel lenses, the 15 Ultra's imaging capability is virtually unparalleled in the industry.
While there may be competitors in imaging this year, surpassing the 15 Ultra seems unlikely. Battery life might not be the best, but there's little to complain about given the inherent limitations of mobile phone internal space. Top-tier models from various companies are more or less similar in this regard. Given the Ultra version's demanding functional configuration, packing in new features is crucial. A 6000mAh battery in the 15 Ultra would be impressive.
In other aspects, expect top-notch features. The screen will undoubtedly be a domestic top-tier 2K four-sided curved display. While peak brightness might not be the highest, overall quality is likely unmatched. Satellite communication will also be included, combining Tiantong satellite calls with Beidou satellite messaging. The possibility of Xiaomi launching a Xiaomi 15 Pro satellite communication version like last year is slim.
Beyond the Xiaomi 15 Ultra's functional configuration, pricing is a significant concern. A price hike is inevitable; the question is by how much. Personally, I lean towards a $300 increase, starting at $6799. However, some speculate a $500 hike, pushing the price to $7000. In reality, those who can afford the Ultra version are less price-sensitive; the key is whether the features satisfy them.
Currently, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra has secured three certifications and awaits an official release date. Those interested can indeed look forward to it.
