A 1000 Yuan Price Gap: Three Key Differences Between iPhone18 Pro and Max

Few could have anticipated that Apple would forgo the release of the standard iPhone18 or the much-rumored iPhoneAir 2nd generation this year. Instead, the tech giant unveiled just two models within the iPhone18 Pro lineup, alongside a foldable iPhone Duo.

The iPhone18 Pro starts at a price of 9999 yuan, marking a 1000 yuan increase over its predecessor from last year. Meanwhile, the iPhone18 Pro Max commands an additional 1000 yuan premium over the Pro model.

Prior to the official unveiling, speculation ran rampant regarding potential performance and configuration disparities between the two models, particularly concerning the variable aperture feature, with many assuming the Max variant would boast superior capabilities.

However, following the official launch of the iPhone18 Pro and subsequent meticulous comparisons, it became evident that both models share identical configurations and performance metrics. They are equipped with the same chip, memory setup, CMOS lens, and technical specifications.

This led some to question whether the 1000 yuan price difference merely accounts for the screen upgrade from 6.3 inches to 6.9 inches. Is a mere 0.6-inch increase in screen size truly worth the extra 1000 yuan?

In reality, after rigorous real-world testing, three distinct differences have emerged between the iPhone18 Pro and Max:

  1. Screen Size: The iPhone18 Pro features a 6.3-inch display with a resolution of 2622 × 1206, while the Max boasts a larger 6.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2868 × 1320. Despite the size difference, both screens maintain the same PPI (pixels per inch), resulting in identical screen parameters and display effects.
  2. Battery: The iPhone 18 Pro Max houses a substantial 5391mAh battery, compared to the iPhone 18 Pro's 4056mAh capacity, representing a roughly 33% difference. This translates into a notable disparity in battery life. According to Apple's official claims, there's a 9-hour gap in video playback capability, with the Pro model falling short by 26%. However, Tom's Guide's real-world battery tests revealed a more modest difference: Pro at 16 hours and 17 minutes versus Pro Max at 18 hours and 27 minutes, a gap of approximately 2 hours.
  3. Weight: As expected, the larger model naturally weighs more. The iPhone18 Pro Max tips the scales at 249 grams, truly living up to its "half a pound" moniker, while the iPhone18 Pro is a more manageable 211 grams, 38 grams lighter. If you visit a store to try them out, don't underestimate those 38 grams. When combined with the 6.9-inch body, you'll quickly realize that the Max is both large and heavy, and the difference in user experience is quite noticeable.

In my opinion, unless you're a power user who frequently watches videos or edits photos, the Pro model is the way to go. After all, it's lighter, more compact, and easier to handle with one hand. Opting for the Max means contending with its size and weight, making one-handed operation nearly impossible.

Ultimately, spending an extra 1000 yuan only grants you around 2 more hours of battery life, which doesn't seem particularly essential and may not justify the additional cost. The 6.3-inch screen on the Pro is already quite spacious.
