McLaren has emerged as the most significant casualty in this market downturn. In 2020, the brand boasted 310 insured vehicles in China, marking its zenith. However, by 2024, this figure had dwindled to just 38. This nearly 90% decline from peak to trough is nothing short of a collapse.

McLaren's entry into the Chinese market was relatively late, with meaningful sales figures only beginning to surface in 2014, totaling 82 units.

The brand experienced a surge in 2017, reaching 214 units, and further spiked to 310 units in 2020 amid the pandemic. Yet, this peak proved fragile, lacking a robust foundation. Sales figures fluctuated in subsequent years: 222 units in 2021, 154 in 2022, and 219 in 2023, with no discernible upward or downward trend.

The real cliff came in 2024, with sales plummeting to a mere 38 units.

In 2025, McLaren managed to sell 46 units, just barely staying above the 40-unit mark.

During the first eight months of 2026, only 9 units were sold, representing a staggering 70% drop from the 33 units sold during the same period in 2025.

Annualized, this translates to just over a dozen units, effectively signaling McLaren's near-total withdrawal from the Chinese market.

For a supercar brand, selling fewer than 50 units domestically in a year is tantamount to exiting the mainstream market.

McLaren's collapse can be attributed to both external and internal factors. Externally, the overall contraction of the supercar market has played a significant role. Internally, the brand has been mired in financial difficulties, suffering consecutive global losses, unstable production capacities, and shaky distribution channels, leading to the Chinese market being the first to be neglected. In an era dominated by SUVs, being purely a sports car brand already puts McLaren at a disadvantage. Without a blockbuster product like the Urus to turn the tide...

Its product lineup has also been disrupted. While the 750S and Artura are both outstanding vehicles, the Artura hybrid faced quality issues upon launch, disrupting delivery schedules and tarnishing the brand's reputation during a critical period. Globally, McLaren has been in the news for waves of layoffs, product line cuts, and searches for investment.

Without a stable operational system and a high-volume selling model, McLaren is vulnerable to collapse at any moment!
