For Meizu enthusiasts, it's been a festive period akin to celebrating the New Year. Immediately following the official unveiling of the Meizu 22, the company's CEO has dropped another bombshell announcement.
This morning, Huang Zhipan disclosed on Weibo that the Meizu 22 is currently positioned as a Pro model. Contrary to rumors, there won't be separate Pro and Ultra versions; instead, the Meizu 22 Air will soon make its debut, emphasizing ultra-thinness and expansive screens.
After facing growth constraints with foldable screens this year, smartphone manufacturers appear to have shifted their focus to the emerging category of ultra-thin devices. For instance, Samsung pioneered the launch of the S25 Edge in May, and concept renderings of Apple's iPhone 17 Air have also surfaced recently.
Specifically, the Samsung S25 Edge boasts a svelte 5.8mm thickness and a lightweight 163 grams, making it incredibly pocket-friendly. However, its pursuit of thinness and lightness comes at the cost of a smaller 3900mAh battery, impacting battery life.
According to test data from tech media outlet Android Authority, the S25 Edge lagged behind the standard S25 in multiple test categories, with the S24 even outperforming it in some instances—a surprising result.
Whether due to the battery life falling short of expectations or the pricing being deemed too high, relatively few domestic Samsung fans have been willing to put their money where their mouths are.
According to data shared by blogger @RD Observation, sales of the S25 Edge have not surpassed 10,000 units during the W1-W26 period this year, trailing behind other new models.

On the Apple front, rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 Air, succeeding the "Plus" model, will be even thinner than Samsung's offering, with a minimum body thickness of just 5.5mm. Thanks to its titanium alloy frame, the weight is reduced to 146 grams, and majinbuofficial estimates the battery capacity to be 2800mAh.
If Meizu's ultra-thin flagship can manage to increase battery capacity without compromising on thinness, it stands a strong chance of carving out a niche amidst the tech giants.
