Recently, esteemed institutions have unveiled comprehensive data on the global smartphone market for 2024, alongside insights into the Chinese mobile phone market for the same period.
Upon analyzing these two datasets, a discernible trend emerges: Xiaomi and TECNO are visibly concentrating their efforts on overseas markets, whereas Huawei and VIVO appear to be fortifying their positions within the domestic market.
To elucidate this conclusion, let us delve into the data.
Starting with the global perspective, the top five players are Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, TECNO, and OPPO. Following closely behind, albeit not in the top five, are VIVO, Huawei, Honor, Lenovo (Motorola), and realme.
Notably, among the top five, three positions are held by Chinese manufacturers: Xiaomi, TECNO, and OPPO.
Switching focus to the Chinese market, the top five spots are occupied by VIVO, Huawei, Apple, OPPO, and Honor. Within this ranking, Huawei boasts the strongest growth at 37%, followed by VIVO with an 11% increase. Conversely, Apple, OPPO, and Honor experience declines, while Xiaomi and TECNO fail to make the top five.
Comparing these two datasets, it becomes evident that while Xiaomi and TECNO rank third and fourth globally, they do not feature among the top five in the Chinese market.
In fact, historical data indicates that TECNO's overseas sales account for nearly 100% of its total sales, as it virtually does not operate in China.
Similarly, Xiaomi's overseas sales comprise over 75% of its total, suggesting that three-quarters of its phones are exported, with only one-quarter sold domestically.
Conversely, despite ranking first and second in China, VIVO and Huawei do not feature among the top five globally.
This is attributed to the relatively small proportion of overseas sales in their overall sales. According to previous media reports, VIVO's overseas sales account for approximately 40-45% of its total.
Huawei, due to well-documented challenges, sees its overseas sales contribute only 10-20% of its total sales, with over 80% sold domestically. Consequently, the company has had to intensify its focus on the domestic market.
It's worth noting that while China is the world's largest mobile phone market, its sales account for approximately 23% of global sales, with the remaining 77% taking place in markets outside China. Therefore, even if a company tops the Chinese market, it may still fail to rank among the global top five if its overseas performance is average.
