2024 Global Market Share of Chinese Mobile Phone Brands: TECNO Dominates with 100%, Xiaomi at 75%, Honor at 34%, Huawei at 5%

It is widely acknowledged that while China holds the title of the world's largest mobile phone market, it accounts for merely around 23% of global mobile phone sales. This underscores the fact that overseas markets collectively represent 77% of the total share, surpassing three-quarters of the global pie.

Consequently, as Chinese mobile phone brands grow stronger, they are inevitably expanding into international territories, vying with giants like Samsung and Apple for that significant 77% of the market. Abandoning such a substantial portion simply because they dominate the domestic 23% would be imprudent.

Market Share Chart

Brands such as Xiaomi, TECNO, Oppo, vivo, Huawei, and Honor have all embarked on overseas expansion initiatives, aiming to capture a larger slice of the global pie.

The question then arises: By 2024, what will be the overseas sales share of these Chinese mobile phone brands? Who will emerge as the top performer internationally?

Market Share Projections

By analyzing two comprehensive reports, along with global data from Omdia and domestic insights from Canalys, we can provide a reasonable estimation of these figures.

It's worth noting that in Canalys' data, Xiaomi's domestic sales did not rank among the top five, leading Canalys to omit Xiaomi's domestic sales data. However, given Xiaomi's close competition with other manufacturers, we can cautiously predict that Xiaomi's domestic sales hover around 42 million units, slightly trailing Honor but not by a substantial margin.

Sales Distribution

The resulting proportion data, as illustrated in the figure above, provides a clear picture of each brand's international performance.

TECNO stands out as the clear leader, boasting an overseas market share of nearly 100% due to its focus on international sales rather than the domestic market. This strategy has propelled TECNO to become the fourth-largest mobile phone brand globally, a remarkable achievement.

Xiaomi follows closely, with an overseas sales share of up to 75%, or roughly three-quarters of its total sales. The brand sold 127 million units abroad, making it the leading Chinese brand in terms of overseas sales.

Top Brands

OPPO's overseas sales account for approximately 59%, a commendable performance. Vivo's overseas mobile phone sales contribute 51%, while Honor's and Huawei's overseas sales share stand at 34% and 5%, respectively.

Lenovo and realme are not included in the above data due to the unavailability of their domestic sales figures, which prevents accurate estimation. Nonetheless, both brands exhibit substantial overseas sales shares.

Market Trends

Please note that the above data serves as a reference and may not be entirely accurate. However, it underscores the strong international performance of Chinese mobile phone brands, particularly TECNO, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo, whose overseas sales contributions exceed half of their total sales. As for Honor and Huawei, their specific challenges are well-understood, and thus, require no further elaboration.

In summary, there is ample room for growth for Chinese mobile phone brands in overseas markets. It is hoped that while maintaining their domestic competitiveness, these brands will also strive to excel internationally, with the ultimate goal of surpassing Apple and Samsung.
