The Pentium Pony's Challenge Is No Longer Just About Price

FAW's Pentium Pony five-door, four-seat version was officially launched recently, carrying an official price of 44,900–54,900 yuan and a limited-time promotional price of 39,900–49,900 yuan. The announcement of the new car's pricing has since set off heated debate among netizens.

Judging from online comments, price has become the flashpoint. Some netizens argue, "You might as well spend 10,000 more and get an A0-class car—nobody's buying A00s these days," while others were blunt: "This price just doesn't appeal" and "It'll get crushed by the competition." Clearly, many netizens feel the Pentium Pony five-door version is priced on the high side.

In fairness, compared with the three-door Pentium Pony, the five-door version's pricing is hardly outrageous, given the new car's gains in practicality. It is 350mm longer, 30mm wider, and has a 262mm longer wheelbase, and it adds rear doors for easier entry and exit. It also introduces a 328km range variant, and the entire lineup supports DC fast charging, going from 30% to 80% in about 30 minutes. With improvements in space, range, and charging, a price increase is understandable.

That said, product upgrades can justify a higher price tag, but they don't necessarily make consumers feel they're getting a good deal. The A00-class car market remains under pressure today. From January to August this year, cumulative sales were about 519,000 units, down roughly 50% year on year. Although the market has shrunk, this segment is still hardly short of capable competitors.

In the same-class market, the fifth-generation Wuling Hongguang MINIEV is a formidable rival. The two cars are close in price and both feature four-seat layouts, but the Hongguang MINIEV comes standard with rear power windows, driver and front passenger airbags, and rear parking sensors, while some trims also offer a reversing camera and ESC electronic stability control. Although the Pentium Pony five-door version has improved in space and range, the Hongguang MINIEV has its own configuration highlights.

The Chery QQ Ice Cream, with its lower price, holds a certain edge in same-class competition. Its entry version is priced at about 36,900 yuan, below the Pentium Pony five-door version's limited-time starting price of 39,900 yuan. Some trims also offer keyless entry, remote start, and delayed headlight shutoff, and a 4-meter turning radius makes daily parking and U-turns more flexible. Although space and range fall short of the Pentium Pony five-door version, for users mainly using it for short-distance commuting, a lower price combined with practical features is also appealing.

Add to that competition from models such as the Changan Lumin and Geely Panda, and the micro pure electric market is full of strong players, each with its own strengths in price and configuration. Breaking through will be no easy task for the Pentium Pony five-door version.

Beyond same-class competition, the Pentium Pony five-door version also faces pressure from A0-class small cars. Competition in the auto market is fierce at present and the price war is intense. Some small cars have seen their prices drop to 50,000–60,000 yuan, so consumers can buy models with more space and richer features by slightly increasing their budget.

Take the cost-effective Geely Xingyuan as an example. Its guide price starts at 64,800 yuan, 24,900 yuan higher than the Pentium Pony five-door version's limited-time starting price of 39,900 yuan. Although the price is higher, advantages such as a five-seat layout, rear-mounted rear-wheel drive, and the Flyme Auto smart cockpit also give consumers who value space and intelligent experience a reason to stretch their budget.

By comparison, the Wuling Bingo Pro is closer in price to the Pony five-door version. Its entry model is priced at 56,800 yuan, only 6,900 yuan more than the Pony five-door version's limited-time top-trim price, and it offers a five-door five-seat layout and a 65kW motor. If the budget is raised to 63,800 yuan, buyers can also choose the 330km range flagship model, equipped with front side airbags, a 540° panoramic camera system, power driver's seat adjustment, and front seat heating. Spending a little more brings improvements in space, power, and configuration—something worth consumers calculating.

In addition, the strength of the BYD second-generation Seagull is not to be underestimated either. Its guide price starts at 65,900 yuan, 26,000 yuan higher than the Pony five-door version's limited-time starting price, but in return comes five-seat space, a 360° panoramic camera system, AEB automatic emergency braking, and stronger power. For consumers not satisfied with simple commuting, the Seagull is also a choice worth considering.

In the final analysis, FAW Pentium keeps upgrading the Pony in hopes of sustaining its previous sales momentum with stronger practicality. But the accompanying price increase also gives consumers more room to compare and choose other models.

At a time when the mini car market is gradually shrinking, the Pony five-door version must both compete with same-class rivals for users and respond to the appeal of highly cost-effective small cars. Facing pressure from both sides, it will probably not be easy for the Pentium Pony five-door version to match its previous market performance.
