In the Guangzhou Huangpu community, "odorless, stainless, and accurately sorted" garbage disposal points have become the new norm. The smart waste classification management system jointly developed by the Huangpu District Urban Management and Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau and Hikvision is seamlessly integrating into daily life, transforming the vital yet often overlooked task of waste classification and contributing to the continuous enhancement of the community environment.

Thoughtful "assistants" offer classification guidance at your fingertips

Mr. Chen, a recent resident, used to struggle with community information. "When is the next community event? How do I dispose of bulky waste? I had to ask neighbors or search online for a long time." Nowadays, the information display screen at the disposal point serves as his "daily helper." The screen clearly presents waste classification tips, community notices, garbage collection times, and convenient service information, along with weather forecasts and health tips. "The information is clear and accessible while throwing away garbage, which is more convenient than checking my phone. For those less tech-savvy, it's a real boon!" Mr. Chen pointed at the screen with a smile.

The smart sound column, in harmony with the information screen, acts as the "intelligent guide" at the disposal point. As residents approach to discard garbage, it emits a clear voice prompt: "Hello, please sort and dispose of garbage according to the signs. Thank you for your cooperation!" If residents miss the disposal time and find the port closed, the sound column promptly informs them: "Hello, the scheduled disposal time has ended. You can go to the 24-hour missed disposal point at the east gate of the community." This responsive voice service integrates promotional guidance into the disposal process, effectively reducing misplacement and retention, enhancing convenience for residents.

An all-weather "environmental guardian" ensures fresh and reassuring disposal points

To bolster community safety, the intelligent sensing system at the disposal site includes smoke and fire recognition functions. When smoke or open flame hazards are detected, the smart camera immediately triggers an early warning mechanism: activating a sound and light alarm and simultaneously pushing alarm information to the management backend for prompt handling by on-duty personnel. This "intelligent early warning and quick response" system enhances the community's fire response capabilities, providing round-the-clock safety for residents and the environment.

The system not only ensures safety but also maintains environmental cleanliness. Dedicated cameras and AI algorithms monitor garbage can status 24/7: notifying collection personnel when cans approach overflow, reminding residents through voice prompts to properly dispose of bags outside cans, and alerting cleaners to the issue. If small advertisements are posted or facilities are damaged, management personnel can swiftly respond. "From 'being complained about' to 'actively cleaning up,' efficiency has soared, and satisfaction has naturally improved," said Liu, the sanitation squad leader in charge of the area.

Intelligent reminders and guidance foster natural classification habits

Kitchen waste must be disposed of after breaking the bag, a step often forgotten. A dedicated camera atop the station takes a top-down photo of the garbage can interior. When intact kitchen waste is detected, the system connects to the smart sound column to gently prompt: "Hello, please dispose of kitchen waste after breaking the bag. Thank you for your cooperation!" This reminder encourages timely bag breaking and further guides residents in developing good habits.

The system backend automatically tracks locations with frequent non-bag-breaking and misclassification behaviors, aiding managers in precisely adding graphical and textual guidance or providing bag-breaking assistive tools.

89 transfer stations take on a new look with smart management ensuring cleanliness

Beyond residential communities, 89 garbage rooms and transfer stations in Huangpu District have been equipped with "smart equipment." Video devices at each station are networked to a unified management platform, safeguarding the cleanliness and safety of these "urban cleaning stations" 24/7. "Previously, we had to inspect each one individually, leaving my legs sore after a full day. Now, we can monitor each station's real-time status on the platform," said a staff member from the district's waste classification management center. The platform automatically pushes early warning information upon detecting issues like garbage accumulation or surrounding clutter, ensuring prompt resolution.

From intelligent voice guidance to all-weather environmental protection, the smart waste classification management system created by Guangzhou Huangpu City Management and Hikvision leverages technology to enhance convenience and cleanliness, jointly painting a picture of a delightful, livable Huangpu with its residents.
