"We don't consider adding or deleting a few upstream applications, modifying the language, wallpaper, or adjusting the application layout, etc., as a version update for an operating system. We hope that every major version update includes a large number of genuinely user-needed and innovative features to push the boundaries of Linux desktop distributions' capabilities, making Linux desktops as powerful as the commercial operating systems Windows and MacOS."

This is the attitude of Liu Wenhuan, the founder of the deepin community, and also the philosophy behind deepin V23!

The newly released deepin V23 has undergone 9 iterations and 51 internal beta tests before its official launch. Based on Linux 6.6 LTS, it brings a new DDE user interface, deep integration of AI capabilities, the 'Ruyi Linglong' independent package toolset, self-developed deepin IDE, atomic updates, 8 self-developed development tools, and over 200 product optimizations and new features, offering a fresh look inside and out.

What sets deepin V23 apart is that it is the first desktop operating system distribution launched by a Chinese root community, genuinely adopting a large number of self-developed solutions at the repository, application layer, and operating system core components levels, providing an excellent development platform originating from China for global open-source operating system enthusiasts.

I. New DDE

Adopting a brand-new Cloud Flow design concept, it offers a refreshed visual experience while retaining V20 user habits, enhancing system management capabilities and interaction experiences.

With 6 desktop themes, 11 icon themes, and 9 cursor themes in different design styles, there's bound to be one that appeals to your aesthetic.

Adding alphabetical sorting and free sorting modes, optimizing the display of frequently used and newly installed applications, enhancing application management flexibility, and unifying window and fullscreen mode experiences.

Optimizing space utilization through features like dock display, added workspace views, and application trays, allowing users to customize settings based on their preferences.

Enhancing access and usage efficiency of system functions by abstracting over 20 system functions through plugins and designing quick panels.

Automatically organizing applications and files, supporting flexible icon placement, and offering a one-click hide or show desktop collections feature to simplify desktop management.

Introducing the deepin ID module, graphically displaying system information, customizing boot animations, and localizing the control center design.

II. AI For OS

In the era of AI and AI-powered PCs, deepin V23 also deeply integrates AI technology.

At the application layer, UOS AI supports natural language commands for over 20 operating system settings capabilities and 40+ usage scenarios;

At the chip layer, it supports mainstream domestic CPU chips, NVIDIA, and other mainstream GPU chips from both domestic and foreign sources;

At the large model layer, it opens interfaces and supports connecting to all large models in the OpenAI interface format, allowing users to adapt their own models.

Simultaneously, to lower the threshold for community users to access AI functions, deepin has partnered with Baidu Qianfan Large Model to provide free trial accounts to community users!

Key new features include:

Multi-model Connectivity

Supports both cloud and local models, covering 90% of mainstream open-source large models and AI frameworks. Local models enable fully offline operation of UOS AI, eliminating network dependencies, strengthening data security, and facilitating unified management of multiple large models.

UOS AI Assistant

Multi-modal, capable of listening, speaking, and drawing, supporting voice and text input, text-to-speech, image, and text generation. The personal knowledge assistant can build knowledge bases, while the device assistant can answer system questions.

AI-powered Systems and Ecosystem Applications

Multiple applications have been integrated into the UOS AI ecosystem, with UOS AI providing AI capabilities to various applications through local/online models, including over 60 applications such as system control, intelligent global search, intelligent email, and intelligent image viewing.

Additionally, the personal version of WPS Office For Linux will be available in the deepin app store in late August, integrating AIGC into word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, and supporting functional integration between UOS AI and WPS AI in local personal knowledge base construction.

III. Ruyi Linglong

As the core package format of deepin V23, Ruyi Linglong achieves complete decoupling of applications and systems through isolation technology, resolving compatibility issues and security concerns arising from loose permissions, enabling "one architecture, one build" and reducing maintenance costs.

The deepin V23 app store has established a Ruyi Linglong app section, completing the adaptation and migration of over 2000 Ruyi Linglong packages, including open-source and commercial software, covering multiple categories.

It is estimated that by the end of this year, the Linglong software ecosystem will reach 3000 applications, exceeding the current size of flatpak and snap stores by early next year.

IV. deepin IDE

deepin IDE supports multiple hardware and software architectures and programming languages; integrates code version management tools and performance analysis tools; brings updates like AI-powered enhancements, editor optimizations, and GIT function enhancements.

Supports compiling and packaging Linglong applications, improving code navigation and search efficiency.

Users can install deepin IDE with one click through the deepin app store and enjoy AI programming assistance to boost development efficiency.

V. Multi-CPU Architecture Support

deepin V23 has achieved significant results in multi-architecture support, successfully supporting various mainstream CPU architectures such as x86, ARM, LoongArch64, and RISC-V.

Among them, ARM architecture supports Phytium D2000 and D3000, Kunpeng 920.

LoongArch supports Loongson 3A5000, 3A5000LL, 3A5000M, 3C5000, 3C5000L, 3A6000.

VI. Other Core Features

- System Repository

Comprehensively upgraded, building a new V23 repository, upgrading over 8000 core packages to enhance stability and security, and better support new hardware and architectures, including ARM64, RISC-V, and LoongArch64.

- Atomic Updates

Adopts a new installation and upgrade mechanism, reducing disk space usage during full disk installations.

Offers a flexible upgrade backup mechanism to ensure rollback capabilities in case of upgrade issues, providing multi-version management capabilities for users.

Optimizes system backup solutions, reducing disk space usage compared to the original A/B partition scheme

Adds 'atomic updates' capability, allowing users to flexibly rollback or switch system versions based on backup restore points

- Cross-device Collaboration

Offers cross-device and cross-system file transfer and operation sharing capabilities, enabling more convenient collaboration across multiple devices and terminals.
