Currently, there are many types of mobile phone chips in the world, but not too few.
The mainstream ones include MediaTek, Qualcomm, Huawei HiSilicon, Samsung, Unisoc, Google, Apple, and a few small manufacturers that have launched some low-end chips, such as Lingsheng.
Even Xiaomi has the Pengpai S1, although there is no S2, it is rumored that it may be released next year, using a 4nm process.
From the data in the second quarter of 2024, MediaTek is the leader, shipping 115 million chips in a single quarter, followed by Qualcomm, Apple, Unisoc, Samsung, Huawei HiSilicon, Google, and others.
Of course, these seven major manufacturers are currently market monopolists, with the seven brands accounting for almost 100% of the market share, while other manufacturers basically have zero share. The market share is highly concentrated, and the chip industry is inherently a winner-takes-all game, so it is unlikely that new manufacturers will be able to break into the market in the future.
So the question arises, what is the average price of mobile phones using these chips, and can we roughly determine the quality of a mobile phone based on its chip?
In fact, it is possible, as a recent report listed the shipment volume of mobile phone chips and the corresponding value of mobile phones using these chips, as shown in the above figure.
Using this table, we can convert it into the following table, which should be self-explanatory.
As can be seen, mobile phones using Apple chips have the highest unit price, reaching $1,022 (approximately 7,268 yuan). Next comes Huawei, with an average price of $750 (approximately 5,335 yuan) for mobile phones using Huawei's Kirin chips.
Google comes in third with an average price of 3,557 yuan, followed by Samsung with an average price of 3,348 yuan for mobile phones using its Exynos chips. Qualcomm is next with an average price of 3,106 yuan for mobile phones using Qualcomm chips. For MediaTek chips, the average price is 1,361 yuan, while for Unisoc chips, the average price is only 854 yuan.
From this table, it can also be inferred that Apple and Huawei chip certifications are synonymous with high-end products. As for Qualcomm, it can vary from high-end to low-end. MediaTek is slightly lower, and Unisoc is the lowest, with an average price below 1,000 yuan.
In the future, it will be clear that seeing an Apple phone will immediately indicate a high price, and seeing a Huawei phone with Kirin chips will also signify a premium price tag.
