In June, various new energy brands announced their sales figures for May. Notably, the new energy brands collectively rebounded in May, with all top 10 automakers experiencing month-on-month growth in sales. GAC AION, with 40,073 vehicles sold, regained the crown after several months. Li Auto returned to over 30,000+ sales, surpassing Hongmeng Zhixing, which ranked third, by nearly 5,000 vehicles. NIO once again exceeded 20,000 vehicles sold per month since July last year, ranking fourth. ZEEKR's sales in May increased by 114.52% year-on-year, but there was only a slight gap of 451 vehicles between it and the sixth-placed Leapmotor. Deep Blue Motors maintained a stable performance, and sales are likely to further increase after the launch of the G318. XPeng and NIOZHA ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, although their rankings were not high, their sales have improved compared to themselves. Xiaomi Motors temporarily ranked tenth, and there is hope that its ranking will rise further once delivery capacity improves.
1 GAC AION 40,073 vehicles
After being pressed by Li Auto and Hongmeng Zhixing for four months, GAC AION finally breathed a sigh of relief in May and regained the monthly sales crown. This month, GAC AION sold 40,073 vehicles, representing a month-on-month increase of 42.54%, making it the only new car brand to exceed 40,000 vehicles sold. This growth data indicates that GAC AION's market share is steadily improving, and it may usher in a new round of sales growth in the future.
2 Li Auto 35,020 vehicles
Li Auto delivered 35,020 new vehicles in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 23.85% and a month-on-month increase of 35.8%. This is also the first time this year that Li Auto's sales have exceeded 30,000 vehicles, suggesting that it has seemingly regained its delivery rhythm from last year. From a product perspective, the delivery of the Li L6, which began in April, was the key to Li Auto's sales increase, with cumulative deliveries now exceeding 15,000 vehicles. Benefiting from the sales momentum driven by the launch of the Li L6, the sales of L-series models have grown significantly, helping to enhance Li Auto's overall development momentum.
3 Hongmeng Zhixing 30,578 vehicles
In May, Hongmeng Zhixing delivered 30,578 new vehicles across its entire lineup, representing a month-on-month increase of 3.19%, but it did not disclose the delivery volumes of its individual brands, such as Wenjie and Zhijie. In terms of specific models, the Wenjie M9, a large SUV, delivered 15,873 new vehicles this month. As a high-end model with a price range of 469,800 yuan to 569,800 yuan, the delivery performance of the Wenjie M9 is quite impressive. However, the sales driver, the new Wenjie M7, has recently received complaints from old owners due to issues with its updated model's additional configurations, which Hongmeng Zhixing needs to take seriously.
4 NIO 20,544 vehicles
In May, NIO sold 20,544 vehicles, representing a year-on-year increase of 233.78% and a month-on-month increase of 31.52%, setting a new high. This is the second time that NIO has entered the 20,000-vehicle monthly sales club since July last year. According to relevant NIO officials, there are two important reasons for the recent positive trend in NIO orders: first, the 2024 model series has high computing power, and the full-range and full-volume push of intelligent driving capabilities has demonstrated NIO's real-world capabilities and potential in high computing power. Second, consumers are increasingly recognizing the convenience of battery swapping for pure electric vehicles, as well as the lack of anxiety about battery degradation. In addition, NIO's BaaS price adjustment and promotions have provided users with more benefits.
5 ZEEKR 18,616 vehicles
ZEEKR, which recently went public in the U.S., delivered 18,616 new vehicles in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 114.52% and a month-on-month increase of 15.71%, setting a new high. As one of Geely's sub-brands, ZEEKR has performed very strongly among the second generation of new energy vehicles, maintaining a monthly sales volume of over 10,000 vehicles in the high-end market for a long time and ranking first in sales of pure electric models priced above 250,000 yuan. From January to May this year, ZEEKR delivered a total of 67,764 new vehicles, representing a year-on-year increase of 112%, with a promising development momentum.
6 Leapmotor 18,165 vehicles
Compared to April, Leapmotor's sales performance in May improved even further, delivering a total of 18,165 new vehicles, representing a month-on-month increase of 21.06%, bringing it closer to the 20,000-vehicle monthly sales club. The Leapmotor C11 and C10 are the main sales drivers for Leapmotor, and the recently launched Leapmotor C16 has also received strong market attention. In addition, cooperation with Stellantis has boosted overseas markets, and Leapmotor's sales are expected to further increase in the future.
7 Deep Blue Motors 14,371 vehicles
With only two models, the SL03 and S7, Deep Blue Motors achieved sales of 14,371 vehicles in May. It must be admitted that Deep Blue Motors has strong single-vehicle sales capabilities, and the Deep Blue G318, which is scheduled to be launched in June, may bring new sales growth points for Deep Blue Motors. In addition, the Deep Blue SL07 and C857 (internal code name) will also be unveiled this year, and the expansion of the product matrix will inject new vitality into Deep Blue Motors.
8 XPeng Motors 10,146 vehicles
After experiencing a downturn in sales in the previous few months, XPeng Motors finally broke through the 10,000-vehicle mark in May. Currently, XPeng Motors is in a period of transformational pain, with the impact of channel consolidation, internal anti-corruption, senior management changes, model updates, and changes in the dealer model gradually emerging. However, this will require a longer process, and its effect on sales will not be significant in the short term. Nevertheless, just as NIO's battery swapping advantage is gradually becoming more prominent, XPeng Motors is also expected to usher in a new era of growth after a series of reforms.
9 NIOZHA 10,113 vehicles
NIOZHA ranked ninth in the May sales ranking of new energy brands, just ahead of Xiaomi Motors, which has only recently emerged. However, compared to Xiaomi Motors, which relies solely on the Xiaomi SU7, NIOZHA's situation of having many models but poor sales is much more precarious. In response, NIOZHA investor Zhou Hongyi has recently made multiple statements "criticizing" NIOZHA CEO Zhang Yong for insufficient marketing. However, frankly speaking, the reason for NIOZHA's poor sales is not just marketing, but more so due to the lack of obvious product highlights and brand characteristics.
10 Xiaomi Motors 8,630 vehicles
In the second full delivery month after the launch of the Xiaomi SU7, Xiaomi Motors reported sales of 8,630 vehicles. From April to May, Xiaomi Motors' cumulative sales reached 15,688 vehicles. If subsequent deliveries keep up, monthly sales are likely to further increase. Since Xiaomi Motors' launch, its sales have far exceeded expectations. Lei Jun also stated at the Future Auto Pioneer Conference of the 2024 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Auto Show: "Full-scale expansion, delivery acceleration. Xiaomi Motors aims to deliver 100,000 vehicles this year and strive for 120,000 vehicles."
