Recently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a research report on driver fatality rates based on 2023 model year vehicles and similar earlier models. Data shows that from 2021 to 2024, small cars, sports cars, and muscle cars topped the list for driver fatality risks, while large pickups emerged as the most threatening to other road users. The report serves as a reminder: vehicle size, power performance, and driving behavior collectively determine overall road safety.
▍Small Cars and High-Performance Vehicles: Persistently High Driver Fatality Rates
Among all vehicle categories Statistical vehicle models , over half of the top 20 models with the highest driver fatality rates were small sedans, sports cars, or muscle cars equipped with high-horsepower engines. The Kia Rio led with 170 deaths per million registered vehicle-years, followed by the Nissan Versa (164) and Chrysler 300 rear-wheel-drive (132). High-powered models like the Dodge Charger HEMI rear-wheel-drive and Dodge Challenger rear-wheel-drive also exceeded 120 fatalities, with the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette making the list.
IIHS President David Harkey noted, 'Even with excellent safety ratings, small cars face significant physical disadvantages in collisions with large pickups and heavy SUVs, increasing occupant fatality risks.' For sports and muscle cars, the issue stems more from their powerful performance and marketing targeting aggressive drivers: 'Their danger primarily lies in driving behavior.'
▍Large Luxury SUVs: 'Safety Fortresses' with Zero Fatalities in Multiple Models
Among the 20 models with the lowest driver fatality rates, 18 were SUVs, mostly mid-size to large luxury vehicles. Six models—Audi Q7 all-wheel-drive, BMW X7 all-wheel-drive, Chevrolet Tahoe all-wheel-drive, Mercedes-Benz GLB all-wheel-drive, Mercedes-Benz GLE rear-wheel-drive, and Toyota Tundra CrewMax all-wheel-drive—achieved 'zero driver fatalities.' The Porsche Macan (4), BMW X5 all-wheel-drive (5), and Toyota RAV4 Prime (5) also performed exceptionally well.

These low-fatality models generally feature larger body sizes, comprehensive active and passive safety systems, and owners who tend to be older with more driving experience. However, the IIHS emphasized that luxury vehicles' low fatality rates are not solely due to their design but may also relate to factors like lower mileage and safer driving environments for owners.
▍Other Drivers' Fatality Rates: Large Pickups Dominate as Road Hazards
This year, the IIHS highlighted 'other drivers' fatality rates'—deaths of drivers in other vehicles involved in accidents. Results showed large pickups pose an exceptional threat to other road users. The Ram 3500 four-wheel-drive long-bed variant topped the list with 204 deaths per million registered vehicle-years, followed by the Dodge Charger HEMI (161) and Chevrolet Silverado 3500 (126). Ten of the top 20 models were large or extra-large pickups.
This phenomenon directly correlates with size and weight: large pickups dominate collisions due to their mass, transferring immense impact forces to other vehicles. Notably, some models—like the Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Malibu—appeared on both the highest driver fatality and highest other-driver fatality lists, indicating they pose high risks to both occupants and other road users.
▍Size-Based Statistics: Small Cars Endanger Themselves, Large Vehicles Harm Others
Aggregated by vehicle size and category, microcars had a driver fatality rate of 158 deaths per million registered vehicle-years, far exceeding the average of 37. Large cars (104) and large sports cars (75) also had elevated rates. In contrast, large luxury SUVs had a mere 10 fatalities, while extra-large luxury SUVs had 13.

For other drivers' fatality rates, large pickups (67) and extra-large pickups (110) led, with large SUVs (67) and extra-large SUVs (70) also significantly above the mean of 53. Mid-size sedans and small SUVs were relatively 'mild,' posing less threat to other drivers. These figures reflect a stark reality: larger vehicles protect their occupants but may harm others.
▍Beyond Safety Ratings: Driving Behavior and Economic Factors Matter
The IIHS stressed that driver fatality rates do not solely reflect vehicle passive safety performance. For example, high fatality rates in affordable models may relate to factors like a higher proportion of novice drivers, longer daily mileage, and work-related stress among owners. Luxury vehicle owners often enjoy safer driving environments and better insurance coverage. Additionally, differences in fatality rates between four-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive versions suggest that usage scenarios (e.g., snowy regions) and vehicle price influence real-world risks.
Harkey summarized, 'While vehicle size and power matter, crashworthiness and effective collision avoidance systems are equally critical. However, these data remind us that driving safety largely depends on driver behavior—whether they speed, drive distractedly, or aggressively.'
The IIHS report offers valuable insights for the industry and consumers. While ordinary buyers may lack direct access to fatality rate data, they can prioritize vehicle size, weight, active and passive safety features, and crash test ratings from authoritative agencies. Additionally, choosing large SUVs may enhance occupant protection but could increase risks to other road users. Ultimately, regardless of the vehicle type, obeying traffic laws, driving smoothly, and controlling speed are the fundamental ways to reduce accident fatalities. The most reliable safety guarantee always rests in the driver's hands.
