According to Fast Technology on August 6, media reported that John Schulman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, posted on social platform X that the decision to leave OpenAI was difficult, and that the choice stemmed from his desire to delve deeper into AI alignment and return to practical technical work. He believes he can gain a new perspective at Anthropic.
Looking back, after earning his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley, Schulman resolutely threw himself into the grand vision of OpenAI, becoming one of its early core members. He played an indispensable role in the development of ChatGPT, the revolutionary AI chatbot platform, leading the reinforcement learning team and meticulously fine-tuning AI models to ensure they could accurately respond to human instructions, demonstrating an unprecedented level of intelligence.
With the departure of Jan Leike, a pioneer in AI safety who has now moved to Anthropic, Schulman bravely took on the challenge of leading OpenAI's alignment science efforts, guiding the affectionately named 'post-training' team in their ongoing pursuit of deeply integrating AI with human values.
At the same time, he was also a key member of OpenAI's newly established safety committee, contributing his wisdom and strength to the safe development of AI technology. However, it remains to be seen who will take up the baton left by Schulman.
This change has significantly altered the makeup of OpenAI's founding team. What was once a collective achievement of 11 pioneers has dwindled to just three remaining stalwarts: CEO Sam Altman, President Brockman (who is about to embark on an extended vacation for 'relaxation and recharging'), and Wojciech Zaremba, a leader in language and code generation.
