On October 2nd, China's top five independent automakers—BYD, Chery Automobile, Geely Automobile, Changan Automobile, and Great Wall Motors—released their September sales figures in sequence. Among them, Geely, Chery, and Changan each achieved over 2 million units in annual sales. Let's delve into their specific sales performances! In the first place, BYD Automobile reported selling 396,270 units in September, including 393,060 passenger vehicles. This represents a 5.5% year-on-year decrease compared to the 419,426 units (including 417,603 passenger vehicles) sold in the same month last year. However, its overseas sales skyrocketed by 107% to 70,851 units.

Regarding specific brand sales, BYD's Dynasty and Ocean series sold 355,774 units; Fangchengbao sold 24,121 units; Denza sold 12,407 units; and Yangwang sold 758 units.

From January to September 2025, BYD Automobile's cumulative sales reached 3,260,146 units, marking a 19.1% increase from the 2,736,401 units sold during the same period last year. Its overseas cumulative sales stood at 701,579 units.

Commentary: BYD's September sales experienced a slight decline, but its overseas sales soared, indicating significant pressure on its domestic market. Over the first nine months, the company maintained growth. To achieve its annual target of 4.6 million units, a shortfall of 1.34 million units remains, necessitating an average of approximately 450,000 units per month in the remaining three months. Thus, BYD must exert maximum effort in the fourth quarter to reach its annual goal. In the second place, Chery Group reported selling 280,469 units in September, a 14.7% year-on-year increase. Its new energy vehicle sales reached 91,590 units, a 55.4% increase, while its overseas sales hit 137,624 units, a 26.2% increase, marking the fifth consecutive month exceeding 100,000 units.

From January to September 2025, Chery Group's cumulative sales reached 2,007,768 units, a 14.5% year-on-year increase. September's brand-specific sales were as follows: the Chery brand sold 169,580 units; the Exeed brand sold 10,802 units; the Jetour brand sold 56,586 units; and iCAR sold 10,734 units.

Commentary: Chery Group's sales exceeded 2 million units in the first three quarters, a record high. Its September sales surpassed those of Geely Automobile and Changan Automobile, reflecting a strong performance. In the third place, Geely Automobile reported selling 273,125 passenger vehicles in September, a 35% year-on-year increase and a 9% month-on-month increase, marking a new record high. This marks the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year and month-on-month growth. From January to September, its cumulative sales reached 2,170,189 units, a 46% year-on-year increase, already matching its full-year 2024 sales. The current annual sales target achievement rate stands at 72%.

In September, Geely Galaxy brand sales reached 120,868 units, a 131% year-on-year increase and a 9% month-on-month increase, setting a new record. Zeekr delivered 18,257 units, a 4% month-on-month increase. Lynk & Co sold 32,902 units, a 28% year-on-year increase and a 21% month-on-month increase. Its overseas sales reached 40,665 units, showing year-on-year and month-on-month growth.

Commentary: Geely Automobile is performing exceptionally well, with both monthly and cumulative nine-month sales showing growth. This is primarily driven by the rapid sales increase of the Geely Galaxy brand, with models like the Geely Xingyuan, Galaxy E5, and Galaxy Xingyao 8 PHEV consistently selling over 10,000 units per month. The Geely Xingyuan frequently tops the monthly sales charts for its model series. In the fourth place, Changan Automobile reported selling 266,000 units in September, a 25% year-on-year increase. Its new energy vehicle sales reached 103,000 units, an 87% year-on-year increase. Its overseas sales hit 60,000 units, a 23% year-on-year increase.

Regarding specific subsidiary brand sales in September, Avatr sold 11,028 units, marking several consecutive months exceeding 10,000 units. Deepal sold 33,626 units, a 48.1% year-on-year increase and a 19.1% month-on-month increase. In the fifth place, Great Wall Motors reported selling 133,639 units in September, a 23.29% year-on-year increase, marking its best-ever September performance. Its new energy vehicle sales reached 45,961 units, a 52.55% year-on-year increase, setting a new record. Its overseas sales hit 50,269 units, a 13.98% year-on-year increase, surpassing 50,000 units for the first time and setting a new high. Its box-type vehicle sales reached 63,389 units, a 37.31% year-on-year increase, leading the box-type vehicle market.

September's brand-specific sales were as follows: Haval sold 81,923 units, a 30.24% year-on-year increase. Wey new energy vehicles sold 11,026 units, a 63.23% year-on-year increase. Great Wall Pickup sold 12,901 units, with global cumulative sales exceeding 2.8249 million units.

From January to September 2025, Great Wall Motors sold 923,358 units, an 8.15% year-on-year increase.

Commentary: Great Wall Motors performed well overall in September, with year-on-year sales increases across the Haval, Tank, Ora, and Wey brands. Only Great Wall Pickup experienced a sales decline. Its cumulative sales over the first nine months also showed growth. That concludes the sales review of the top five independent Chinese automakers in September.
