According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), preliminary statistics show that in June, retail sales of passenger cars reached 1.755 million units, down 8% year-on-year but up 2% month-on-month. Since the beginning of this year, cumulative retail sales have reached 9.828 million units, representing a year-on-year increase of 3%. In terms of new energy vehicles, retail sales in the passenger car new energy market in June were 864,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 30% and a month-on-month increase of 6%. Since the beginning of this year, cumulative retail sales have reached 4.119 million units, representing a year-on-year increase of 33%.
As the "Big Seven" of domestic leading traditional automakers, how did they perform in June and the first half of the year? Has the pattern changed? Let's take a look.
1 BYD (Passenger Cars)
June sales: 340,211 units
First half sales: 1,607,145 units
BYD sold 341,658 vehicles in June, of which 340,211 were passenger cars, representing a year-on-year increase of 35.2%. From January to June 2024, BYD's cumulative sales of passenger cars reached 1,607,145 units.
Specifically, BYD Dynasty and Ocean sold a total of 324,838 units in June, representing a year-on-year increase of 35%. Denza sold 12,275 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 11%; Ora sold 418 units; and Fangchengbao sold 2,680 units. In terms of passenger car exports, BYD achieved 26,995 units in June, representing a year-on-year increase of 156.2%.

2 Chery Group
June sales: 200,412 units
First half sales: 1,100,621 units
Chery Group announced its June sales data, with a cumulative sales of 200,412 new vehicles, representing a year-on-year increase of 38% and a slight month-on-month increase. Among them, exports reached 97,034 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 22.7%; and new energy sales reached 44,851 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 230.6%. From January to June, the group's cumulative sales reached 1,100,621 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 48.4%, with half-year sales exceeding one million units.
By brand, Chery sold 123,694 units in June, Starway sold 13,252 units, Jetour sold 42,088 units, and iCAR sold 5,907 units.
In terms of exports, the overseas market contributed 97,000 units in June. Compared with the same period last year, Chery's export volume in June increased by 22.7% year-on-year. Chery's cumulative export volume in the first half of the year reached 532,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 29.4%. Among domestic automakers, Chery is one of the few automakers that are developing the new energy vehicle market while not abandoning the fuel vehicle market.
3 Geely
June sales: 166,085 units
First half sales: 955,000 units
Geely Automobile Holdings Limited announced today that the group's total sales in June 2024 reached 166,085 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 24%. Among them, new energy vehicles reached a new high, with sales of 65,959 units, representing a year-on-year increase of over 88%, accounting for nearly 40%. The cumulative sales from January to June reached 955,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 41%.
Geely has four major brands: Geely, Geely Galaxy, Lynk & Co., and ZEEKR. By brand, Geely sold 121,540 units, of which Geely Galaxy sold 15,975 units; Lynk & Co. sold 24,439 units, and ZEEKR sold 20,106 units.
In terms of overseas exports, Geely's export volume in June was 35,347 units, representing a year-on-year increase of over 61%; the cumulative export sales from January to June reached 197,428 units, mainly exported to countries such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Kazakhstan, the United States, and Sweden.
4 Changan Automobile
June sales: 138,292 units (Autonomous Passenger Cars)
First half sales: 822,000 units
Recently, Changan Automobile announced its June production and sales report. The data showed that in June, Changan Automobile sold 225,013 units, representing a year-on-year decrease of 0.3%. Among them, the independent brand new energy sold 63,586 units in June, and the independent brand passenger car sales reached 138,292 units in June.
Currently, Changan has only announced the specific situation of its independent brand new energy vehicles. From January to June, Deep Blue delivered 83,858 units, AVATR delivered 29,030 units, and Changan Qiyuan delivered 72,968 units. In terms of exports, Changan's independent brand export sales in June were 29,322 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 46.26% and a month-on-month decrease of 11.91%, accounting for 15.5% of the group's sales.
5 Great Wall Motor
June sales: 98,080 units (including commercial vehicles)
First half sales: 560,000 units
In June, Great Wall Motor's cumulative sales were 98,080 units, representing a year-on-year decline of 6.55%, marking two consecutive months of negative growth. From January to June, Great Wall Motor's cumulative sales reached 559,669 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 7.79%. Among them, new energy vehicles sold 26,100 units in June, and the cumulative sales from January to June reached 132,300 units.
Specifically, Haval remains the mainstay of Great Wall Motor, selling 47,729 units in June; WEY sold 2,939 units in June, with a half-year sales of 19,867 units; Tank sold 26,059 units in June, with a cumulative sales of 116,038 units in the first half; Ora sold 6,029 units in June, with a cumulative sales of 31,749 units in the first half; and Great Wall Pickup sold 15,251 units in June, with a cumulative sales of 91,916 units in the first half.
In terms of exports, Great Wall Motor exported 38,000 units in June, representing a year-on-year increase of 52.4%. From January to June, the company exported 202,000 vehicles, representing a year-on-year increase of 62.6%, showing a good growth momentum.
6 SAIC Passenger Vehicle
June sales: 64,576 units
First half sales: 382,000 units
SAIC Group released its production and sales report, with 300,500 units sold in June, representing a year-on-year decrease of 25.92%. Among them, SAIC Passenger Vehicle sold 54,576 units, representing a year-on-year decrease of 24.62%; IM Motors sold 5,200 units, and MG Motor India sold 4,810 units.
Currently, SAIC Passenger Vehicle has gathered three major brands: Roewe, MG, and Feifan. Among them, Roewe has launched the D series models that can run on both fuel and electricity, while MG focuses mainly on overseas markets, and the prospects for Feifan Automobile are relatively unclear. IM Motors, which focuses on the high-end market, currently has four products on sale: IM L7, IM LS7, IM LS6, and IM L6.
7 GAC Group
June sales: 58,000 units
First half sales: 315,000 units
GAC Group sold 163,500 units in June, representing a month-on-month increase of 4.5%, with exports increasing to 68,000 units in the first half of the year. Among them, the sales of its independent brands GAC AION and Trumpchi in June were 25,692 units and 32,784 units, respectively.
However, different from the production and sales report data, GAC AION officially announced that its global sales in June were 35,027 units, and its first overseas factory in Thailand is about to complete construction and put into production. The second-generation AION V Baolong will soon be rolled off the production line and launched globally.
In terms of exports, GAC Group exported 11,000 vehicles in May, and 68,000 vehicles in the first half of the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 190.2%. Its overseas market has covered 65 countries and regions, and GAC AION has completed its comprehensive layout in the ASEAN region.
