July Sales of Emerging Automakers: Widespread Month-on-Month Declines, Leapmotor Leads with Over 100,000 Units Sold

By around 2:00 PM on August 1st, the majority of leading domestic emerging automakers had released their sales figures for July. Generally speaking, most automakers experienced a month-on-month decline in sales, with only a select few achieving growth. Among them, Leapmotor emerged as a standout performer, achieving both year-on-year and month-on-month growth, and setting a new record for the highest monthly sales among emerging automakers. Let's delve into the data.

Rank 1: Leapmotor sold 101,267 units in July, marking a significant 102% year-on-year increase and an 8.45% month-on-month rise. Leapmotor not only broke its own sales record but also set a new benchmark for monthly sales among emerging automakers. In its promotional poster, Leapmotor proudly claims that each of its 10 products is a winner. However, the official has not disclosed the specific sales figures for each model.

Nevertheless, a reasonable estimate would suggest that the number of Leapmotor models surpassing 10,000 units in monthly sales for July is likely limited. The most probable candidates are the Leapmotor A10, Leapmotor C10, and Leapmotor D19. Both the Leapmotor A10 and Leapmotor D19 are new models introduced by Leapmotor this year, and their outstanding cost-performance ratios have made them immediately popular upon launch.

Soon, another new model from Leapmotor, the Leapmotor A05, will also enter the market. With sales now firmly established, the critical challenge for Leapmotor is how to achieve a premium brand image.

Rank 2: HiMode sold 45,046 units in July, representing an 11.02% month-on-month decline and a 5.7% year-on-year decrease compared to June of this year. Many have long argued that it is unfair to compare HiMode's overall sales with those of a single automaker. It's worth noting that HiMode currently comprises five brands, ranging from AITO to Shangjie.

If we examine these five brands individually, AITO remains the primary sales contributor. Taking June's sales as an example, AITO accounted for nearly 60% of HiMode's total sales. This proportion is unlikely to have changed significantly in July.

Besides AITO, among HiMode's other four brands, Shangjie holds the most potential for achieving new sales heights. From January to July this year, HiMode's cumulative deliveries reached 286,000 units, marking a 13.7% year-on-year increase.

Rank 3: XPENG sold 38,027 units in July. Although XPENG moved up one spot in the sales rankings compared to April, re-entering the top three, it still experienced a 5.23% month-on-month decline, albeit with a 4% year-on-year increase.

The XPENG MONA M03 has been a key driver of XPENG's sales over the past two years. It's no exaggeration to say that the MONA M03 has revitalized XPENG, which was previously on the brink. The model's success is primarily attributed to its affordable price. In contrast, XPENG's models priced above 200,000 yuan have not performed well in terms of sales.

This indicates that despite its apparent sales success, XPENG faces the same challenge as Leapmotor: how to shed the 'low-end' label and compete with NIO, Li Auto, and AITO in the premium market segment.

NIO, Zeekr, Li Auto, and XIAOMI ranked 4th to 7th in July's sales chart, with sales figures of 35,934, 35,837, 30,468, and over 30,000 units, respectively (XIAOMI did not disclose specific sales data). Except for Zeekr, which saw a slight month-on-month increase, the others experienced declines.

Seres, ARCFOX, and VOYAH ranked 8th to 10th on the list. Seres sold 29,213 units, down 10.42% month-on-month. ARCFOX sold 23,517 units, a 2.44% month-on-month decrease. VOYAH sold 13,189 units, down 7.45% month-on-month but up 31% year-on-year.

The above provides a summary of the July sales performance of domestic emerging automakers. It remains to be seen whether the month-on-month decline will continue into August.
