For autonomous vehicles, there is more than one way to 'see' the world. Typically, multiple sensors are used to perceive the traffic environment, with common sensors including LiDAR, cameras, millimeter-wave radar, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), and more. These sensors continuously collect external data in different ways and at different frequencies. To ensure perception accuracy, great attention is paid to time synchronization when processing perceptual data.

Why is 'time synchronization' important?

Time synchronization is crucial because each frame of data from different sensors has a time label (timestamp). If the timestamps are not aligned, viewing the world by combining their data will lead to errors.

Consider a straightforward example. Camera imaging is an instantaneous action—at the moment a picture is taken, all pixel data in the entire image represents the scene at that instant. However, LiDAR generates point cloud data by rotating and emitting laser pulses to scan the surroundings, which may take tens or even hundreds of milliseconds per full rotation. If we directly combine an image from a camera with a point cloud from LiDAR without accounting for the time difference, inconsistencies between the image and the point cloud are likely to occur, especially when the vehicle is moving at high speed or when there are dynamic objects (such as pedestrians or bicycles) in the scene.

For the perception module in autonomous driving, such time deviations create a 'partially lagging' view of the world, easily leading to misjudgments and decision errors. Time synchronization aims to align data from different sources so that they represent the same moment in time.

On autonomous vehicles, cameras and LiDAR are commonly used sensors. To discuss their time synchronization, it is essential to understand the differences in data collection between LiDAR and cameras.

Camera imaging is an 'instantaneous' process. Once the shutter opens and closes, all pixels in that frame are captured at approximately the same time (of course, this also depends on the camera's shutter method, such as the differences between rolling and global shutters, but the essence is that 'one exposure equals one frame').

LiDAR, on the other hand, obtains distance information by emitting laser pulses, receiving reflected signals, and calculating time differences. To cover a full 360° view, it must continuously rotate or perform mechanical scanning. During one full scan, some points are collected at the beginning, while others are collected at the end, resulting in time differences within a complete point cloud.

When aligning a specific image frame with a specific point cloud frame, if the camera captures an image at a given moment while the LiDAR point cloud contains data from tens of milliseconds before and after that moment, even simple matching based on the 'closest timestamp' can introduce significant errors. Time asynchrony causes problems for subsequent fusion algorithms, such as object detection and localization, which require corresponding image and point cloud features to be aligned for accurate position and category calculations. Time synchronization aims to reduce such temporal deviations to an acceptable range.

Hardware-Level Time Synchronization

In autonomous driving systems, one of the most reliable ways to achieve time synchronization is at the hardware level, aiming to have different sensors share a common time reference. Simply put, this means having all sensors keep time on the same clock.

1) Unified Clock Source

The most basic method for time synchronization is to provide a common time source for all sensors. This can be the time signal from GPS or a high-precision clock on the vehicle's main control computing unit. Many autonomous driving systems use GPS's 1PPS (Pulse Per Second) signal combined with IEEE 1588's PTP (Precision Time Protocol) for synchronization.

The GPS 1PPS signal emits a pulse every second, providing a highly accurate time reference. Sensors can use this signal as a reference moment and adjust their internal clocks accordingly. This way, LiDAR, cameras, IMUs, and other sensors can all align their timestamps on the same timeline.

Hardware-level unified clocks make it nearly impossible for time differences to accumulate into significant errors, and all modules can view the world at the same time. However, issues such as network delays and hardware clock drift are inevitable.

2) Hardware Trigger Signals

Another straightforward approach is to use hardware triggers, where one sensor sends a trigger signal to control data collection by another sensor. For example, when the LiDAR rotates to a certain angle, it can trigger an output signal for the camera to take a picture at that exact moment. This ensures that certain angles in the point cloud correspond precisely to the moment the image was captured.

This method allows two sensors to collect data simultaneously in response to the same external event. Its advantage is strong time consistency without the need for complex time protocols. However, its drawback is that it is event-specific and may not be suitable for all scenarios. Additionally, wiring can be cumbersome, requiring extra trigger lines to connect the sensors.

3) Clock Synchronization Protocols

PTP, mentioned earlier, is a commonly used industrial protocol. Its principle involves continuous exchange of time information among network nodes to automatically correct clock deviations. Many high-end cameras, LiDAR systems, and in-vehicle computing platforms support this protocol, allowing multiple devices to 'see the same time' over Ethernet.

This method is relatively flexible, requiring no additional hardware signal lines, as time synchronization is achieved over the network. However, it depends on network quality and is sensitive to delays. PTP can generally achieve microsecond-level precision or better, meeting the needs of most autonomous driving applications.

Software-Level Time Processing

Even with excellent hardware synchronization, minor deviations, jitter, or imperfect alignment can still occur during actual operation. Software-level compensation is then needed to bring the data even closer in time.

1) Timestamp Interpolation and Alignment

When you have timestamp data from two types of sensors, you can use model prediction or linear interpolation to estimate data at a specific moment. For example, if the timestamps for an image and the preceding and following LiDAR data are known, linear interpolation can estimate the LiDAR point cloud at the moment the image was captured. This method fills temporal gaps based on known time relationships, making the data more consistent over time.

The core of this technique is analyzing time differences and using mathematical methods to compensate for deviations. While it cannot completely eliminate hardware time deviations, it is sufficient for many practical scenarios. Since autonomous driving system algorithms generally have some tolerance, as long as the error is within a controllable range, it will not affect overall perception and decision-making.

2) Software Synchronization Modules

In practical software stacks, such as ROS (Robot Operating System) or certain in-vehicle platforms, synchronization modules are provided. These modules subscribe to messages from different sensors and match them within a specific time window. For example, ROS has the message_filters package, which can set a time tolerance interval to align and match camera and LiDAR data based on timestamps. Only data pairs that meet the time requirements are sent for processing. Although this method is not perfect, it remains a practical approach in the absence of hardware synchronization. Many open-source projects use this method to achieve coarse synchronization among different sensors.

3) Online Time Deviation Compensation

A more advanced approach involves online clock deviation estimation, using Kalman filters or other filtering algorithms to estimate real-time time drift and dynamically adjust timestamps. This method requires continuous monitoring of sensor clock drift at the software level and real-time calculation of compensation values. The advantage of this algorithm is its adaptability to different time drift scenarios, but its drawback is higher computational resource requirements and implementation complexity.

Real-World Challenges in Time Synchronization

Time synchronization may sound simple—just unifying the time among sensors through hardware and software methods—but many issues must be addressed in practical implementation.

Different sensors have varying data collection mechanisms. LiDAR point cloud data is obtained through scanning and has an internal time distribution; camera exposure is instantaneous; other sensors like IMUs output data at very high frequencies. This requires the time synchronization system to handle not only the timestamps of different data frames but also understand the internal time structure of their data generation. Additionally, some sensors may not provide precise timestamps or can only have timestamps collected by the host, making time unification even more difficult.

Even with a unified clock source, if network delays are unstable, the latency at which each device receives the time signal will differ, leading to deviations in time synchronization protocols at the micro-time scale. Factors such as network jitter and changes in system load on the in-vehicle computing platform can affect the precision of time synchronization. Protocols must handle these uncertainties and implement extensive time compensation mechanisms at the underlying level.

Some autonomous driving systems use sensors with different frame rates. Aligning data with different frequencies is a significant technical challenge. Complex matching strategies are usually required to ensure that no data is lost on the timeline and that mismatches do not occur.

Time synchronization is indeed a seemingly simple but critically important issue in autonomous driving. It requires collaboration between hardware and software to unify the sensor time reference at the source, using timestamps, trigger signals, and protocol mechanisms to align data from different sensors on the same timeline. Further compensation and alignment are then performed through software algorithms to provide higher-quality data input for subsequent fusion algorithms (such as object detection, localization, and tracking).

With proper time synchronization, LiDAR and camera data can be fused more accurately, enabling autonomous driving systems to 'understand' the surrounding world more realistically and consistently, leading to safer and more reliable driving decisions.
