The final results of the '2024 Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition' were recently announced, bringing back into the public eye a highly anticipated case of academic fraud.
Previously, 17-year-old Jiang Ping, a vocational school student from Jiangsu, ranked 12th globally with a score of 93 in the preliminaries, becoming the first vocational school student to advance to the finals and being hailed as a 'gifted girl' by many netizens. However, as the competition progressed, Jiang Ping's achievements and participation process came under widespread scrutiny.
After investigation, Alibaba DAMO Academy's official announcement revealed that Jiang Ping violated the rule of 'no discussion with others' during the preliminaries, and her math teacher, Mr. Wang, provided assistance during the competition.
As a result, Jiang Ping did not receive any awards, with the gold, silver, bronze, and merit awards being shared among the other 86 contestants.
This outcome not only shattered Jiang Ping's image as a 'gifted girl' but also raised profound questions about the competition's management system and evaluation mechanism, casting doubt on the authority and fairness of the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition.
The focus of public opinion lies in the fact that Jiang Ping was first introduced as a mathematical prodigy in a promotional video produced by Alibaba. The organizers of the Alibaba Math Competition not only failed to fulfill their necessary verification obligations regarding Jiang Ping's impressive preliminary results as a vocational school student but also contributed to her meteoric rise to fame, bringing significant attention to the competition. Now that the truth has come to light, the organizers simply stated that rules were violated and they were victims, bringing the matter to a close.
Meanwhile, her teacher, Mr. Wang, received a disciplinary talk for violating the rules and was disqualified from participating in this year's evaluations. Jiangsu Lianshui Vocational School, as Jiang Ping's alma mater, has also suffered reputational damage.
