Among the emerging domestic automakers, 'NIO-XPeng-Li Auto' are arguably the three most influential. Due to their high visibility and market influence, people have long been accustomed to using 'NIO-XPeng-Li Auto' as a shorthand for these emerging automakers.
As the founders of these three companies, William Li of NIO, Xiaopeng He of XPeng, and Xiang Li of Li Auto, the three executives likely maintain good personal relationships. This is evidenced by the numerous photos of the three together circulating online long ago, with William Li in the center and Xiaopeng He and Xiang Li flanking him, all smiling warmly.
However, as the saying goes, business is war. In the view of Auto Quick Reviews, even if the founders of NIO, XPeng, and Li Auto enjoy good personal relationships, they are ultimately competitors in the same industry. While working together to grow the new energy vehicle market, they also engage in silent battles.
The market is limited, and no one will easily cede ground in this ruthless business war.
Today, it is almost obvious where these three automakers stand. Overall, Li Auto has the strongest development momentum. Among emerging automakers, it leads in sales and was also the first to achieve profitability.
While NIO, like Li Auto, is also classified as a luxury automaker, its sales figures lag significantly behind Li Auto's. To date, NIO may also be the most loss-making emerging automaker in China.
Turning to XPeng, it has neither entered the luxury automaker category nor achieved sales figures comparable to those of NIO or Li Auto. It could be considered the least optimistic among the 'NIO-XPeng-Li Auto' trio in terms of current development.
Perhaps due to its strong sales performance, Li Auto has long had the habit of publishing weekly sales rankings. However, recently, Li Auto's weekly sales rankings have sparked online debates, with NIO and XPeng at the center.
On July 27, William Li, Chairman of NIO, made it clear that if NIO became the sales leader, it would never publish weekly rankings. Qin Lihong, President of NIO, also expressed disapproval of weekly rankings and hoped that other companies would not include NIO in their weekly rankings.
Similarly, Xiaopeng He, Chairman of XPeng, recently stated that while foreign countries are striving for end-to-end solutions, China is preoccupied with weekly sales rankings, which is not the proper form of technological competition.
As early as July last year, XPeng executives had already expressed their stance on weekly vehicle sales rankings: please focus on official information as roadside news is often unreliable.
Regarding the publication of weekly sales rankings, Li Auto has also provided an official response. The gist is that customers often inquire about Li Auto's sales figures when considering a purchase, and frontline staff need authentic data to inform them, as sales figures are an important factor in many customers' purchasing decisions.
Looking at Li Auto's four Weibo posts in July, all of them, without exception, announced that the company had led Chinese emerging automaker sales for consecutive weeks.
Combining this with Li Auto's statement that "product sales are an important basis for many customers to make purchasing decisions," it becomes self-evident why Li Auto insists on publishing weekly rankings while NIO and XPeng dislike them.
Remember when Wenjie's sales surpassed Li Auto's a few months ago, and Li Auto stopped publishing its weekly rankings?
Therefore, the debates sparked by the 'NIO-XPeng-Li Auto' trio over weekly rankings do not require lengthy debates or far-reaching arguments. Ultimately, it boils down to the fact that NIO and XPeng's sales are not as high as Li Auto's.
After all, underachieving students fear nothing more than having their grades publicized.
