According to QuickTech on August 4, NVIDIA's next-generation Blackwell series AI chips have been forced to postpone their release due to design flaws, a decision that may impact major customers including Meta, Google, and Microsoft.

It is understood that mass production of the Blackwell chips was originally scheduled to begin in Q3 2024, with deliveries starting in Q4.

However, it is reported that TSMC engineers discovered design issues during preparations for mass production, leading to production delays.

This flaw involves the processor chip connecting two Blackwell GPUs, affecting chip yields and potentially halting production.

Yet, Morgan Stanley expressed an optimistic view in its latest report, suggesting that Blackwell chip production would only be suspended for about two weeks and could catch up in Q4 2024 through TSMC's efforts.

NVIDIA's customers have high expectations for the Blackwell AI chips and plan to use them to develop future generations of large language models and automation features.

For example, Meta has placed orders worth at least $10 billion for the chips, while Microsoft has increased its order size by 20% in recent weeks.

NVIDIA's setback has also raised concerns about the production and delivery of its NVLink server racks, as related companies must wait for new chip samples before finalizing server rack designs.
