Apple's iPhone production capacity shifts from India back to Mainland China

As we all know, due to changes in the external situation over the years, many international giants have more or less prepared for some degree of "de-Chinafication," which is to say, diversifying the supply chain and not relying heavily on China's supply chain.

According to these companies' plans, if possible, some production capacity would be shifted to India and Southeast Asia. For example, Apple has also moved part of its production capacity out of Mainland China in recent years, especially to India.

Data shows that currently, Apple's iPhone production in India accounts for up to 14% of the global output, roughly one-seventh of the total, which is double that of last year.

By the time of the iPhone 15, India and Mainland China had already started synchronized production, unlike before when production in India would lag behind Mainland China by half a year.

However, according to Apple's plans, the proportion of iPhones produced in India will continue to grow, potentially reaching 25-30%, prompting Foxconn to also build factories in India to undertake Apple orders.

However, it now appears that Apple's "de-Chinafication" strategy has failed, with plans not proceeding smoothly.

According to media reports, the Indian factories encountered significant setbacks in assembling the iPhone 15, primarily due to low yield rates and an increase in defective products. For example, the yield rate of iPhone contract manufacturing in India is only around 50%, leading to increased production costs.

Additionally, hygiene standards were not met, with excessive levels of E. coli detected in Indian-made iPhone 15s, causing concern among global consumers and leading to resistance to Indian-made iPhones.

As a result, production of the iPhone 16 will shift some capacity back to Mainland China, prompting Apple CEO Tim Cook to personally travel to China to adjust the supply chain layout.

Currently, in addition to Foxconn, industry giants like BYD, Luxshare Precision, and others have been included in the iPhone 16 supply chain system, becoming Apple's partners and receiving more orders.

After all, for Apple, the iPhone 16 cannot afford any missteps. Huawei has fully returned, and competitors like Xiaomi, Samsung, and OV are all eyeing the market intently. Apple cannot afford any negligence.

It is said that the mobile phone supply chain that was originally planned to follow Apple's relocation is now in a wait-and-see mode, hesitant to make decisions, as for many supply chains, clinging to Apple's coattails is where the meat is.
