TikTok will cease operations of its music streaming app TikTok Music, with the decision taking effect in November. As TikTok's parent company, ByteDance has been experimenting in the music streaming space for four years.
For all that ,TikTok Will continue to exist as an important platform for music discovery 。
TikTok Music app will officially go offline on November 28.
This social-element-integrated music player app was initially launched in Indonesia and Brazil in July 2023 and expanded to Singapore, Australia, and Mexico a few weeks later. Although the company filed a trademark application in 2022, the app was not launched in the US.
"We will shut down TikTok Music at the end of November to focus more on advancing TikTok's role in music streaming services, bringing more listens and value to artists, songwriters, and the entire music industry," said Ole Obermann, TikTok's Global Head of Music Business Development, in a statement.
TikTok Music's closure marks the end of ByteDance's four-year foray into the music streaming space. Prior to TikTok Music's launch, ByteDance operated a similar music streaming app called Resso in India, Indonesia, and Brazil.
It is unclear how TikTok Music's user base developed in the five countries where it was launched. In the Apple App Store, TikTok Music ranks 28th among music streaming apps in Indonesia and 71st in Brazil.
Currently, the app does not rank among the top 100 popular music apps in other operating countries. TikTok's entry into the fiercely competitive streaming market was a bold, albeit strategic, move.
Over the years, TikTok has established itself as a crucial platform for music discovery. Songs that go viral on TikTok often chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and Spotify Viral 50. Why not direct these TikTok music fans to its own streaming app? The company has a dedicated music team focused on collaborating with artists and record labels and exploring new revenue streams.
In addition to launching a music streaming service, TikTok has also established a song distribution tool called SoundOn, partnered with SiriusXM to launch a radio station, hosted its own live concerts, and collaborated closely with major artists for song and album promotions.
However, TikTok's relationship with the music industry has not always been smooth sailing. Earlier this year, the company was in a dispute with Universal Music Group over contractual issues. Some of its music ventures, such as hiring A&R staff, have also tread on sensitive ground for record labels.
Ultimately, many of the company's controversies with the industry revolved around money. Its music streaming app provided TikTok with an opportunity to remunerate copyright holders, incentivizing artists and record labels to provide song access on its main app (a collaboration strategy pioneered by YouTube roughly a decade ago).
For all that , The music industry is unlikely to give up soon TikTok。TikTok He is a creator of popular songs , Any savvy music marketer will continue to use this platform to promote songs 。
In the future, the company may focus on its "Add to Music App" feature, allowing TikTok users to add songs or pre-saved tracks they hear on TikTok to other streaming services like Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.
