According to domestic media reports, on November 6 local time, the Canadian government issued a statement stating that, after a multi-step national security review process, the Canadian government had ordered the termination of operations in Canada by ByteDance's Canadian subsidiary, TikTok Technology Canada.
'This decision is based on information and evidence gathered during the review process, as well as recommendations from Canada's security and intelligence community and other government partners,' said Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne in the statement.
The statement noted that the government's decision was made under the Investment Canada Act, which allows for the review of 'foreign investments that could be injurious to national security.'
The government has not prevented Canadians from accessing the TikTok app or creating content on the platform, and the decision to use social media apps or platforms is a personal choice.
In response, a TikTok spokesperson said, 'Closing the TikTok Canada office would destroy hundreds of high-paying local jobs and is not in the best interests of anyone. The company will sue over this order in court.'
'The TikTok platform will continue to help creators reach audiences, explore new business opportunities, and help businesses thrive.'
