Car sales in Europe during the summer were quite remarkable. The Spanish auto market maintained its upward trajectory in August 2025, achieving total sales of 61,315 units, a robust 17.2% YoY increase, marking the fourth consecutive month of double-digit growth.
New energy vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs) shone brightly, with sales surging 161.8% YoY and market penetration soaring to 24.4%.
At the brand level, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Renault led the pack, with Toyota topping the charts with a 10.9% market share. MG and BYD stood out, particularly BYD, which experienced a remarkable 414.6% YoY growth, setting a new benchmark in Spain.
In the models category, the Dacia Sandero retained its top spot, while the Toyota Corolla surged into second place, and the Tesla Model 3 also witnessed significant growth.
01 Overall Market Trend in Spain
The Spanish auto market witnessed a healthy 17.2% YoY growth in August, with private and corporate car purchases rising by 16.1% and 22%, respectively. Conversely, the leasing market experienced a decline of 13.7%.
Regionally, several areas in the central and northern regions recorded growth rates exceeding 30%, such as Castilla-La Mancha and Cantabria. Madrid, however, lagged behind with a growth rate of only 12%, lower than the national average.
The month's standout feature was the surge in electric vehicle sales. Sales of BEVs and PHEVs approached 15,000 units, accounting for nearly a quarter of the market, a significant jump from last year's 10.9%.
Year-to-date cumulative sales of new energy vehicles reached 138,000 units, a robust 98% YoY increase, indicating a swift transition towards electrification in the Spanish market. The entry of Chinese brands and their increasing acceptance among local consumers are pivotal factors driving this transformation.
Brand Landscape
● Toyota firmly held onto the top spot with 6,698 units sold and a 10.9% market share, the highest so far this year. This achievement is underpinned by the strong performance of models like the Corolla, RAV4, and C-HR, particularly the Corolla, which witnessed a 36.2% sales increase in August, climbing to second place for the month.
● Volkswagen regained the second position with a 33.9% growth, attributed to the clearance discount effect of the T-Roc.
● Renault continued its robust rebound, surging 24% YoY to secure the third spot.
● In contrast, the local brand SEAT, despite a 10.6% growth, struggled to reclaim its position among the top three.
Model Landscape
● Despite a 8.8% YoY decline, the Dacia Sandero retained its leadership position with 2,137 units sold.
● The Corolla made a strong comeback to take second place, underscoring Toyota's advantage in the transition to hybrid and electric vehicles.
● Tesla Model 3 sales skyrocketed by 516.1% YoY this month, propelling it to seventh place.
02 Performance of Chinese Brands and Models
In August, MG led the pack with 2,704 units sold, followed closely by BYD with 1,827 units. Omoda, Jaecoo, ZERO RUN, and Dongfeng Xiaokang sold 937, 676, 200, and 148 units, respectively.
The presence of Chinese brands in Spain has surged dramatically.
● MG sold 2,696 units in August, a 40.4% YoY increase, capturing a 4.4% market share and firmly positioning itself among the top ten. Its EHS PHEV model sales surged by 450%, setting a new record.
● BYD's performance was nothing short of spectacular, with monthly sales of 1,832 units, a staggering 414.6% YoY growth, and a 3% market share, securing the 14th position for the first time. BYD is swiftly breaking through brand recognition barriers in Southern Europe. Amidst the EV boom, it is accelerating its penetration into the European market with the strong competitiveness of its electric vehicle models.
Summary
In August 2025, the Spanish market demonstrated a stable recovery trend after a sustained downturn, marked by a rapid rise in the share of new energy vehicles. Chinese brands and Tesla emerged as key growth drivers, with BYD and MG leading the charge.
