On May 11, Volvo Cars suddenly announced the latest appointment to the management team of the Greater China region, announcing a change in leadership. Firstly, after 16 years of service at Volvo Cars, Yuan Xiaolin, President and CEO of Volvo Cars Greater China, decided to step down from his role in the company's daily operations and management, stating that he would dedicate more time to his family. His successor is Duan Jianjun, a well-known figure in the automotive industry.

Duan Jianjun takes over as the new President and CEO of Volvo Cars Greater China, joining the group's global core management team and global sales management team, and reporting to the China Board of Directors. The official announcement stated that he would assume his new role "immediately." According to Volvo, Duan will oversee end-to-end operations in the Greater China region, responsible for the overall industrial and commercial operations across the entire value chain (research, production, supply, and sales). Yuan Xiaolin will support a smooth transition of management responsibilities over the coming period.

Duan Jianjun, previously the CEO of Mercedes-Benz China, concluded his long tenure at Mercedes-Benz on April 30. He had worked at Mercedes-Benz for 13 years and was regarded as a key figure at the company.

When Duan Jianjun joined Mercedes-Benz in 2013, the local distribution channels were in the early stages of integration, with separate systems for imported and domestically produced vehicles. The product lineup was not well-aligned with the unique preferences of Chinese consumers, and brand marketing lacked emotional and local resonance. Subsequently, Duan participated in adjusting business policies and revitalizing the distribution network. In terms of products, he promoted rapid iteration of localized configurations, introducing China-exclusive versions with features like long wheelbases. Particularly in brand building, Duan brought extensive experience in luxury brand development and was adept at shaping brand identity, infusing Mercedes-Benz with a unique Eastern essence.

A notable move was in May 2015 when he led the change of Mercedes-Benz's Chinese brand slogan from "The Best or Nothing" to "The Best for My Desire, The Best for My Journey." As a result, Duan rose from Executive Vice President to Chief Operating Officer and eventually became the first Chinese CEO of Mercedes-Benz in China in May 2023.

Rumors about Yuan Xiaolin's departure have circulated in the industry over the past two years, with the most recent speculation occurring at the end of 2025. On December 22 of the previous year, Volvo Car (China) Investment Co., Ltd. underwent industrial and commercial changes, with Yuan Xiaolin stepping down as Chairman and HU YANHANG taking over. Previously, on December 10, the legal representative of Volvo China also changed from Yuan Xiaolin to HU YANHANG. This move sparked discussions about a potential leadership change in Volvo's Greater China region, although Volvo later denied such plans.

Yuan Xiaolin is also a prominent figure at Volvo, known for his gentle demeanor and commitment to long-term development. He joined Geely Holding in 2009 and was a key participant in Volvo Cars' acquisition project. He later remained with the Volvo Group, serving in various roles such as Director of the Chairman's Office and President of the China region. From March 1, 2017, Yuan entered Volvo Cars' global management team as Senior Vice President and President and CEO of Volvo Cars Asia Pacific. He became the legal representative of Volvo China in May 2017, serving in this role for eight and a half years.

Before Yuan Xiaolin, the first person responsible for the Asia-Pacific market was Lars Danielson. He had previously worked for Saab Automobile and General Motors. He joined Volvo Cars in 2006 as General Manager of the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden. After Zhejiang Geely Holding Group acquired Volvo Cars in 2010, he came to China to oversee the construction of Volvo Cars' production bases in the country. In 2013, he was appointed Senior Vice President responsible for China operations and took full charge of Asia-Pacific operations in 2015.

Interestingly, before Yuan Xiaolin, Volvo did not seem to have a position for President of the Asia-Pacific region. Until 2017, Lars Danielson's title was Senior Vice President of Volvo Car Group and CEO of the China region. It was only when Yuan Xiaolin took over in 2017 that the new position of President of Volvo Asia Pacific was created. The emergence of this position was related to Geely's deep integration with Volvo and reported directly to Volvo's global CEO. This highlighted Geely's efforts and depth in integrating Volvo at the time.

Volvo is currently at a critical juncture in its transformation, having continuously launched new products in the pure electric and plug-in hybrid markets over the past two years and positioning itself as the leading luxury plug-in hybrid brand. With the introduction of new products, Volvo also seeks greater breakthroughs in the market. Meanwhile, Volvo globally is facing challenges. This leadership transition is crucial for Volvo's development, marking a new phase in its strategy and growth in the Chinese market.
