Bestune Finally Wakes Up! Yueyi 08 Launches Pre-sale, Can the Independent Brand Make a Splash?

On May 29th, a launch event without much star power or flashy performances officially brought the name "FAW Yueyi" into the public eye. As the first flagship model of FAW's inaugural independent new energy brand, the Yueyi 08 dives straight into the fiercely competitive 100,000-150,000 RMB new energy sedan market with a pre-sale price range of 104,900-144,900 RMB.

Frankly speaking, this price caught many off guard. After all, BYD already holds a near-monopoly in this price segment, with brands like Seres, Leapmotor, and Geely also eyeing the market hungrily. FAW Bestune, once a "national team" player, has remained lukewarm in the new energy race. This sudden move—throwing such a card into play—raises questions: Is it aiming to break the mold, or is it destined to be just another also-ran?

Betting on Yueyi 08 for Mainstream Transformation

Let's first examine FAW Bestune's current situation. In 2025, FAW Bestune delivered a solid performance, with annual sales exceeding 200,000 units—a 20-year high—including 172,000 new energy vehicles, achieving an 86% penetration rate. However, a closer look reveals significant issues.

The Bestune Mini electric microcar once contributed over 60% of the brand's sales, peaking at over 10,000 monthly units. But by 2026, sales plummeted, with just 1,239 units sold in January—a near-50% drop. Other models in the Yueyi series fared no better: the Yueyi 03 sold only 2,741 units in April, while the Yueyi 07 barely registered on the radar. Even the fuel-powered Bestune B-series saw declining sales.

In other words, FAW Bestune's seemingly impressive sales figures were built on a single microcar model. If that model falters, the entire brand risks collapse. This is why FAW elevated Yueyi into an independent new energy brand and pinned all its hopes on the Yueyi 08. The Yueyi 08 represents far more than just a new model for FAW Bestune. It marks a critical step in transitioning from "microcar dependency" to the "mainstream market" and serves as the first test of whether the Yueyi brand can stand on its own. Success would grant FAW Bestune entry into the new energy mainstream; failure could relegate the Yueyi brand to yet another fleeting experiment.

Fully Loaded but Still Flawed

From a product standpoint, the Yueyi 08 demonstrates considerable sincerity , even achieving "class-above" features in some areas. However, in the ultra-competitive 100,000-150,000 RMB market, sincerity alone isn't enough—we must compare it head-to-head with competitors.

Let's start with the advantages. The most obvious is size. Positioned as a B+ class model, the Yueyi 08 measures 4,920×1,920×1,475mm with a 2,900mm wheelbase. These dimensions dominate the 100,000-150,000 RMB segment, outclassing the BYD Qin L's 2,790mm wheelbase and even the Seres SL03, which matches the 2,900mm wheelbase but falls 100mm shorter in length. Greater size translates to more spacious interiors—a major selling point for family buyers.

The second advantage is configuration. The Yueyi 08 comes standard with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P dual-NPU chips across all trims, a rarity in this price range where many models above 150,000 RMB still use 8155 chips. Other standout features include frameless power-absorbing doors, frameless mirrors, and a 23-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system—all uncommon at this price point.

The third advantage is service. The Yueyi 08's "521PLUS" service benefits set a new industry standard, offering whole-vehicle lifetime warranty, three-electric system lifetime warranty (unlimited mileage, first owner for three years), lifetime battery decay protection (free replacement if decay exceeds 30%), and a PLUS Zero-Burn Promise (full compensation for a new vehicle if three-electric system self-ignition occurs, unlimited by owner or warranty period). Such policies hold strong appeal for reliability-focused consumers.

However, the Yueyi 08's shortcomings are equally pronounced. The first is brand strength. While FAW Bestune is a state-owned enterprise brand, its new energy market influence lags far behind BYD, Tesla, and even Seres and Leapmotor. Many consumers may not even recognize the Yueyi brand, let alone its products.

The second shortcoming (weakness) lies in powertrain and intelligent driving capabilities. The Yueyi 08's pure electric version offers a maximum range of 650km, while the extended-range version reaches 1,765km—adequate but unremarkable compared to competitors. In intelligent driving, despite equipping Huawei's Qiankun assisted driving platform and LiDAR, it currently supports only basic functions like highway NOA and memory parking, falling short of Xpeng and Li Auto's advanced systems.

The third shortcoming (weakness) is channels and after-sales. FAW Bestune's dealership network primarily serves third- and fourth-tier cities, with many outlets still focused on fuel vehicles. This results in insufficient experience in selling and servicing new energy models, potentially compromising the customer experience and after-sales quality.

Brand Independence Is No Easy Feat

Elevating Yueyi into an independent new energy brand represents a crucial move for FAW to compete in the mainstream new energy passenger vehicle market. Wu Bilei, member of the FAW Group Party Committee and deputy general manager, stated at the launch event that FAW will continue to ramp up support for Yueyi, providing deep empowerment in brand cultivation, technological innovation, product development, ecological collaboration, and overseas expansion.

Technologically, Yueyi has a solid foundation. It leverages FAW's 70-plus years of automotive expertise, along with core technologies like the "Yueying" global new energy architecture, "Chaoguang" architecture, and "Ruyi" cockpit. Yueyi also partners with top-tier collaborators like Volcano Engine, Huawei, and Horizon Robotics, forming a "superstar alliance." Such technical and resource backing is rare among new energy brands.

Yet the path to independence is fraught with challenges. First, Yueyi must swiftly establish its brand identity and user perception. Currently, many consumers still view Yueyi as "Bestune's new energy series" rather than an independent brand. Second, Yueyi needs to accelerate product iterations to form a complete product matrix. With only three models (03, 07, 08) currently, its market coverage remains limited. Finally, Yueyi must resolve channel and after-sales issues to enhance user experience.

Overall, the Yueyi 08 is a product brimming with sincerity (sincerity), offering competitive pricing, configurations, and industry-leading service policies. However, in the cutthroat 100,000-150,000 RMB new energy sedan market, product strength alone isn't enough. Yueyi's success depends not just on the Yueyi 08's sales but on whether FAW Bestune can truly pivot from a traditional automaker to a new energy player.

For consumers, the Yueyi 08's arrival is undoubtedly positive. It expands choices and pushes competitors to up their game. As for its ultimate performance, let the market decide.
