In recent years, against the backdrop of automotive lightweighting, plastic fuel tanks have gradually replaced metal fuel tanks as the mainstream trend in the industry, thanks to their advantages of being lightweight, highly safe, corrosion-resistant, and highly malleable.

High-pressure plastic fuel tanks are a segmentation (subcategory) product of plastic fuel tanks, primarily used in the field of new energy vehicles, specifically plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (including extended-range models). The engines of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have a low start-up frequency, resulting in fuel vapor inside the tank not being promptly burned and consumed, which generates significant internal pressure. The pressure-bearing capacity of normal-pressure plastic fuel tanks makes it difficult to control vapor leakage. To meet emission standards, high-pressure plastic fuel tanks are set to become the mainstream application.

The primary function of an automotive fuel tank is to store and deliver fuel, supplying it to the engine for combustion to power the vehicle. In recent years, against the backdrop of automotive lightweighting, plastic fuel tanks have gradually replaced metal fuel tanks as the mainstream trend in the industry, thanks to their advantages of being lightweight, highly safe, corrosion-resistant, and highly malleable. Plastic fuel tanks are divided into normal-pressure plastic fuel tanks and high-pressure plastic fuel tanks, with normal-pressure plastic fuel tanks used in traditional fuel vehicle applications and high-pressure plastic fuel tanks suitable for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles combine the main advantages of traditional fuel vehicles and pure electric vehicles, featuring long driving range, low tailpipe emissions, high fuel efficiency, and high economic viability. Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent automotive emission standards, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are gradually becoming a new growth pole in the new energy vehicle market.

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the growth rate of hybrid models is significantly higher than the industry average. In 2025, the production and sales of new energy vehicles increased by 29% and 28.2% year-on-year, respectively, while the production and sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles increased by 42.1% and 41.8% year-on-year, respectively. The rapid growth in production and sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles directly drives the release of market demand for high-pressure plastic fuel tanks.

According to the Research Report on Market Monitoring and Future Development Prospects of China's High-Pressure Plastic Fuel Tanks from 2026 to 2030 released by the Xinsijie Industry Research Center, high-pressure plastic fuel tanks are a new subcategory of plastic fuel tanks. Currently, there are relatively few domestic companies with the capability to research, develop, and mass-produce this technology, mainly including Hebei Shichang Automobile Parts Co., Ltd. (Shichang Co., Ltd.) and Yapp Automotive Parts Co., Ltd. (Yapp Co., Ltd.).

Shichang Co., Ltd. is one of the first domestic companies with the capability to mass-produce high-pressure plastic fuel tanks. According to the company's annual report, in 2025, the company's normal-pressure plastic fuel tank business remained relatively stable, while multiple designated projects for high-pressure plastic fuel tanks began mass production. Sales revenue from high-pressure plastic fuel tanks increased by RMB 90.8658 million year-on-year, representing a 137.43% increase.

Industry analysts from Xinsijie stated that high-pressure plastic fuel tanks can better control fuel evaporation and are suitable for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. In recent years, the production and sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in China have grown rapidly, providing broad space for the development of the high-pressure plastic fuel tank market. High-pressure plastic fuel tanks have relatively high technical barriers, and in the future, relevant companies will still need to continuously increase R&D investment and optimize product performance to drive high-quality industry development through innovation.
