At this pivotal moment in 2026, the Great Wall H10 transcends its role as a mere new vehicle; it stands as a “torchbearer” propelled to the forefront by Great Wall Motors, bearing the weight of multiple strategic missions. It shoulders the responsibility of reshaping the value perception of the Great Wall parent brand, vying for influence in the competitive 200,000-yuan-level market, marking a strategic breakthrough following the sluggish growth of its sub-brands, and serving as the inaugural real-world test of Wei Jianjun’s ambitious “One Great Wall” global strategy.

On August 21, Great Wall Motors unveiled its “Large Family Box-shaped New Species,” the Great Wall H10, at the 29th Chengdu International Auto Show, under the banner of “Supporting Life’s Journey, Perfect in Every Way.” Within 12 hours of its pre-sale launch, the H10 garnered an impressive 22,615 pre-orders, and within 24 hours of its official debut, it secured 31,826 firm orders. Simultaneously, test drive demand surged across stores nationwide, with some locations receiving over 170 orders, igniting widespread market attention. However, while initial order success is commendable, it often brings with it a multitude of market and brand expectations. Just how significant is the burden on the shoulders of the Great Wall H10?

Shouldering the Name “Great Wall”

This marks the first instance where a model from Great Wall Motors directly bears the name of its parent brand, “Great Wall.” Over the past decade, Great Wall has adhered to a “one category, one brand” strategy, with Haval, WEY, Tank, and Ora each carving out distinct market niches. However, this model is now facing bottlenecks: Haval’s cumulative sales for the first seven months reached 384,000 units, marking a mere 1.57% year-on-year increase; Tank’s sales for the same period stood at 110,000 units, reflecting an 11.16% decline; WEY, on the other hand, predominantly relies on the WEY High Mountain to maintain its market presence.

Against this backdrop, the Great Wall H10 has been thrust into the limelight. The badge on its front no longer bears the “HAVAL” insignia but proudly displays “GWM” and “Great Wall Motors.” For the first time, the weight of the “Great Wall” name rests so directly on a single model’s shoulders—it must demonstrate that the parent brand’s value proposition resonates more profoundly with consumers than that of its sub-brands.

Since its launch, the Great Wall H10 has maintained sustained market interest, with 22,615 pre-orders within 12 hours and 31,826 firm orders within 24 hours. Online engagement soared, with over 700,000 netizens participating in the model naming solicitation activity, primarily driven by user-generated sharing. Offline, store traffic for test drives remained consistently high, with some locations receiving over 170 orders. The initial user base already encompasses diverse usage scenarios, including urban commuting, family outings, long-distance travel, and camping.

At the product level, the Great Wall H10 focuses on five core selling points: styling, space, intelligent driving, performance, and safety. Its styling incorporates “Square Tripod” aesthetics and a boxy body design, offering five exclusive exterior colors. The interior space provides both five-seat and six-seat layouts, with the six-seat version featuring a native 2+2+2 structure and the five-seat version offering rear seat expandability up to 2.2 meters. Intelligent driving comes standard with lidar and the Coffee Pilot 3 system, supporting full-scenario assisted driving from parking spot to parking spot. The powertrain features the second-generation Hi4 performance four-wheel-drive architecture, matched with an intelligent chassis, enabling light off-road capability. Safety is ensured through a “nine-horizontal, six-vertical” cage-like body structure, with high-strength steel accounting for 80.4% of the body, 2000 MPa hot-formed steel used in key areas, and 18 active warning and emergency protection functions. Overall, the Great Wall H10 caters to diverse scenarios, including daily family commuting, long-distance travel, and outdoor adventures, through these five core values.

Can It Carve Out a Path?

The Great Wall H10 adheres to a pricing strategy of “full specs from entry,” with all core configurations included, targeting the 200,000-yuan-level family SUV market. The H10 camper variant also made its debut at the auto show, featuring factory-installed expansion points, a 6kW external power discharge system, and a pop-up roof tent, providing a double-decker independent resting space suitable for both urban commuting and outdoor camping. At the Chengdu Auto Show, the Great Wall H10 further solidified its positioning in the family SUV market by combining category innovation, product strength, and user co-creation.

The large six-seat SUV market in 2026 is already fiercely competitive. Data from the China Passenger Car Association reveals that cumulative sales in this segment for the first four months were approximately 432,200 units, reflecting a 14.24% year-on-year decline, transitioning from incremental expansion to a market characterized by intense competition among existing players. Multiple mainstream automakers have already entered the fray. The Great Wall H10 enters with a limited-time trade-in price starting at 201,800 yuan. In a market where competition is fierce, sustained popularity hinges on establishing irreplaceable product value and brand recognition. The H10 has opened a market gap with its “boxy large six-seat” category innovation, but the true test lies in whether it can defend this gap.

As the first boxy SUV from the Guiyuan platform, the H10 also bears the responsibility of validating the commercial viability of the Guiyuan platform. The platform supports five powertrain types: plug-in hybrid, extended-range, pure electric, hydrogen, and fuel. The H10 is the first parent-brand model from this platform. If the H10 can gain a foothold in the market, it will prove the Guiyuan platform’s potential for large-scale commercialization, paving the way for subsequent models based on the same platform.

However, the most immediate pressure the Great Wall H10 faces is delivery. Delivery cycles at dealerships generally range from 6 to 8 weeks, with Great Wall even introducing a “waiting gift” policy—free basic maintenance for four times if delivery is not completed within 30 days of order locking. Whether the over 30,000 firm orders can be smoothly converted into actual deliveries and registered sales remains uncertain.

Moreover, a deeper challenge lies in the fact that consumer willingness to wait for a vehicle does not guarantee sustained loyalty to the same brand. The Great Wall H10 must pass the real-world reputation test after delivery—whether the space is truly as spacious as advertised, whether the intelligent driving is genuinely user-friendly, and whether the hybrid fuel efficiency is truly worry-free. The answers to these questions will determine whether the H10 is a fleeting success or a long-term bestseller.

Commentary

The excitement generated by the Chengdu Auto Show will eventually subside, but the questions left by the Great Wall H10 will linger in the industry. This is likely a model burdened with the highest expectations from Great Wall—reshaping the parent brand’s image, strategically positioning itself in the 200,000-yuan-level market, serving as the inaugural real-world test of the Guiyuan platform’s commercialization, and laying the groundwork for a unified global brand image. Four missions are simultaneously placed on a single model. Such a “four-in-one” product is rare in the history of the Chinese automotive industry. Wei Jianjun defines the Great Wall H10 as “perfect for the whole family,” pointing to the travel ideals of family users. But what this model must uphold is far more than just the “perfection” of individual families; it is the confidence and resolve of Great Wall Motors to break through and ascend at a critical juncture of brand restructuring. Blockbusters are easy to come by, but sustained success is hard to achieve. The journey of the Great Wall H10 has only just begun.
