After seeing Tesla's sales performance, do new car manufacturers still have the heart to "brag"?

Judging from sales trends, the market performance of new domestic car manufacturers in 2023 can be described as "the sesame flowers bloom higher and higher."

The latest sales data shows that most of the domestic mainstream new car manufacturers have experienced an increase in sales both year-on-year and month-on-month in the first nine months of this year.

Among them, Li Auto's sales increased by 48.9% year-on-year, with cumulative sales exceeding 340,000 units from January to September; NIO's sales increased by 113.7% year-on-year, with cumulative sales of 173,000 units this year; VOYAH's sales increased by 99.6% year-on-year, with cumulative sales of 52,500 units from January to September.

Then there's Seres, which, with Huawei's empowerment, saw its September sales increase by 265.09% year-on-year, with cumulative sales of 317,000 units from January to September.

Judging solely from the data, the new car manufacturers are indeed experiencing a strong momentum of development in 2024.

However, when comparing Tesla's sales data, you'll realize that even strong new car manufacturers like Li Auto and WENJIE probably don't have the heart to brag calmly anymore.

Why only mention Li Auto and WENJIE? There are two reasons:

First, as of the end of September this year, Li Auto and WENJIE are the only two new car manufacturers in China to have surpassed 300,000 in sales;

Second, among the big players in the domestic auto industry, if one were to choose who is the most likely to brag, Li Xiang of Li Auto and Yu Chengdong of Huawei would undoubtedly be among the top contenders.

Let's look at Tesla's sales data.

According to information released by Tesla on October 25, Tesla delivered 463,000 vehicles globally in the third quarter of this year, setting a new quarterly delivery record for the year.

In addition, Tesla specifically emphasized that the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling model in China from January to September and the best-selling model in Europe in September.

With a quarterly delivery of 463,000 vehicles, the average monthly delivery is close to 155,000 vehicles.

In comparison, the cumulative sales of Li Auto and WENJIE, the two best-selling new car manufacturers in China in the first nine months, are still far less than the combined sales of Tesla in just two months.

However, Tesla's claim that the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling model in China from January to September is somewhat imprecise and should be qualified with "one of the."

After specifically checking the sales data of domestic car models from January to September, CarQuickRating found that the best-selling model in China is actually the BYD Qin PLUS, with cumulative sales of 363,000 units. The Tesla Model Y comes in second with sales of 338,000 units.

These two models are also the only two to have surpassed 300,000 cumulative sales in the first nine months of this year in the domestic auto market.

Even so, the sales data of the Tesla Model Y from January to September is basically very close to that of Li Auto. It must be said that the Tesla Model Y's performance in the domestic market remains strong, ranking first in pure electric vehicle sales from January to September this year.

Finally, it is hoped that domestic new energy vehicle manufacturers will continue to work hard, talk less and do more, and at least catch up with Tesla in terms of domestic market sales.
