Zeiss Boosts Investment to Expand 25,000-sqm Optical Plant, Elevating Its Exclusive EUV Optical Manufacturing Capabilities!

Recently, the Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Division of Germany's Zeiss officially unveiled a significant expansion initiative for its Oberkochen production site. The plan involves constructing new manufacturing and cleanroom facilities, along with supporting R&D buildings, spanning a total area of 25,000 square meters within the existing premises. These facilities are specifically designed to develop and tailor a comprehensive suite of core optical modules for EUV lithography machines, catering to the needs of Dutch lithography equipment behemoth ASML.

This strategic move is perceived as a crucial production capacity deployment by Zeiss, targeting advanced process technologies at 2nm and below. It directly addresses the escalating demand from global wafer fabs for next-generation EUV lithography equipment, which has become increasingly pressing.

According to ASML's latest production capacity blueprint, by 2027, the annual output of Low-NA commercial EUV lithography machines is set to surge by 30% from the current 65 units. Moreover, the assembly cycle for the entire machine will be streamlined from 22 weeks to just 15-16 weeks. For High-NA models, designed for processes below 2nm, each projection optical column encompasses over 40,000 components and weighs a hefty 12 tons. Meanwhile, the illumination system incorporates an additional 25,000 components and weighs approximately 6 tons, epitomizing the zenith of precision engineering. The polishing, grinding, and calibration of a single mirror span several months, culminating in atomic-scale morphological testing within a 150-ton vacuum chamber. This entire process system, honed over decades, remains unparalleled to this day.

This production capacity expansion will not only effectively mitigate the global 'optical bottleneck' in the upstream supply chain of advanced process chips but also exert a profound influence on the supply dynamics of AI computing power, mobile processors, and data center chips. Furthermore, it will solidify Zeiss's unparalleled strategic standing in the realm of ultra-high-precision semiconductor optics.
