In June, Lei Jun took center stage by personally conducting—and live-streaming—a rigorous salt lake city test for the Xiaomi YU7 GT.
During this test, the vehicle successfully executed 50 consecutive full-force emergency brakes, decelerating from 100KM to a complete stop without any cooling interval. It also demonstrated its prowess with 8 emergency brakes from 200KM to 0, and even conquered a 300KM extreme braking challenge.
The test data revealed remarkable consistency: the first brake stop measured 33.69 meters, the 50th at 34.28 meters, with the shortest distance being 32.28 meters and the longest 35.41 meters. This performance underscored exceptional stability and outstanding heat fade control.
Following the live stream, Lei Jun faced criticism from some quarters, with questions raised about the purpose of such extreme tests. Some wondered if Lei Jun was merely trying to demonstrate that the Xiaomi YU7’s brake pedal wouldn’t fail—an expectation that should arguably be a given.
Even among those who refrained from criticizing Xiaomi, the focus remained largely on the braking distance, heat fade characteristics, and the performance of the carbon-ceramic brakes. The possibility of the brake pedal itself breaking was not a widespread concern.
Interestingly, however, more than three months later, during a brake test conducted by another brand, a car’s brake pedal bracket actually did break...
To be clear, this test was undoubtedly extreme. Under normal driving conditions, it’s highly unlikely that an average driver would exert such intense force. Nevertheless, the breakage occurred.
I won’t disclose the specific brand or model involved; the incident speaks for itself.
But let’s be realistic: in a sudden, high-stress situation, it’s not inconceivable that a driver might instinctively apply the kind of force seen in that test.
As a critical component for driving safety, brakes simply cannot afford to fail. Moreover, considering the test data, the force applied wasn’t even exceptionally high—1612N is merely at the international threshold. Such a failure should not have occurred.
Brakes are a matter of life and death for vehicle occupants; there’s no margin for error.
In light of this, netizens have begun to collectively applaud Lei Jun, acknowledging his foresight in conducting various extreme braking tests on the YU7 well in advance. These tests have now proven Xiaomi’s excellence in braking performance.
Many have revisited the original test video, noting that Lei Jun’s efforts are increasingly recognized as invaluable. It seems Lei Jun himself could not have anticipated that the very tests he was criticized for would later be viewed in such a positive light.
