In the boxy car market, who are the biggest winners and who are falling short? September's sales figures are now available, and according to Yiche data, the Fangchengbao Titan 7, Haval Big Dog, and Great Wall H10 took the top three spots, with sales of 27,544, 9,265, and 9,103 units, respectively. Ranks 4-10 included BAIC Off-Road BJ30 (9,075 units), Tank 300 New Energy (6,466 units), Titan 3 (5,131 units), Haval Menglong PHEV (4,223 units), BJ40 Extended Range (3,687 units), Leopard 5 (3,289 units), and Jetour Traveler (3,045 units).
From these rankings, it is evident that Great Wall, BYD, Chery, and BAIC Off-Road continue to dominate the boxy car market. However, this landscape may shift with Geely's recent entry.
Boxy cars have emerged as the hottest market segment over the past two years. In addition to traditional powerhouse Great Wall strengthening its foothold, BYD's Fangchengbao and Chery's Jetour iCAR have also made significant strides. Among China's top five automakers (BYD, Geely, Chery, Changan, Great Wall), Changan recognized the market's potential as early as 2024, launching the Shenlan G318, while Geely was the last to join, officially entering this year with the Galaxy Warship 700. With the Warship 700's debut, all five major Chinese brands have now established their presence in the boxy car market.

Additionally, FAW Hongqi introduced the G919 this year, officially stepping into the boxy car arena. Dongfeng has plans for its Mengshi brand, along with Fengon and other brands, to launch boxy cars in 2027. GAC Motor entered the segment with the Trumpchi Yue7 this year, its first boxy car model. Among mainstream automotive groups, SAIC Motor currently lacks a boxy car offering, while newcomers like Leapmotor, NIO, Li Auto, and XPeng, whose brand positioning differs significantly from boxy cars, have no such plans. Meanwhile, HiMo Smart Travel has introduced the Xiangjie G9 under the Xiangjie brand.
According to Yiche's statistics, there were 44 boxy car models on the market this September. What was once a niche, personalized market has now evolved into a major mainstream segment. However, not every automaker has secured its desired market share, even among the top five Chinese brands.
In terms of sales, the biggest beneficiaries are Great Wall, BYD, and Chery. Great Wall pioneered the domestic boxy car segment, sparking widespread interest in the entire category. BYD has achieved remarkable growth through its new energy boxy cars. Chery, targeting the 150,000-yuan price range, has experienced explosive growth with the Jetour Traveler and iCAR in both fuel and pure electric markets.

Data indicates that Great Wall has continuously expanded its lineup around the Tank 300 as its flagship model, including the Tank 300, Haval Big Dog, Haval Menglong, and Great Wall H10. The H10, launched in August, performed well in its initial two months, delivering 10,178 units in August and 9,103 in September. In September's boxy car sales ranking, the Haval Big Dog and H10 ranked second and third in their respective categories. Additionally, the Tank 300 New Energy took fifth place, and the Haval Menglong PHEV sixth. Great Wall holds four spots in the top ten, underscoring its influence in the boxy car market. However, Great Wall's challenge lies in its lack of a blockbuster model with monthly sales exceeding 20,000 units.
Next is BYD. Despite controversy surrounding its Fangchengbao brand, it entered a rapid growth phase in 2025. Fangchengbao sold 234,637 units in 2025, up 316.1% year-on-year. From January to September this year, its sales reached 229,543 units, matching last year's total. The Titan 7 has consistently ranked first in the boxy car segment, with sales equal to the combined total of the second and third-place models. However, the arrival of the Great Wall H10 and Warship 700 may divert some Titan 7 customers. Among BYD's brands, Fangchengbao is currently the fastest-growing.
Chery entered the boxy car market in 2023 with the Traveler series, achieving stable monthly sales exceeding 10,000 units, at one point nearing 20,000. This propelled Jetour to become Chery's growth leader. The Traveler sold 3,045 units in September this year, ranking fourth, or 3,750 units including hybrid versions. Additionally, the Chery iCAR series' V23, launched in 2024, has maintained stable monthly sales around 5,000 units, slightly declining to 2,748 this year. Unlike other boxy cars, the iCAR follows a fully urbanized path, relying on retro design to capture the market rather than pursuing off-road capabilities. Currently, Chery's main brand lacks boxy car offerings. While Jetour and iCAR have seen sales declines this year, no new growth points have emerged yet.

Among the top five Chinese automakers, Changan was the first to launch a boxy car under its main Shenlan brand. As early as 2024, the Shenlan G318's launch marked its entry into this hot market, with its name reflecting its market positioning. Media reports suggested the G318 aimed for monthly sales of 10,000 units. However, this target has not been met since its 2024 launch. Yiche data shows the G318's peak sales were 2,483 units in its first delivery month in 2024. After September 2025, its monthly sales remained below 1,000 units. On August 21 this year, the new G318 was launched, positioned as the only boxy car in the 200,000-yuan range equipped with Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5 Pro and HarmonySpace 5 cockpit, featuring in-cabin LiDAR. September marked its first full delivery month, with Yiche reporting sales of 99 units—its first-ever monthly sales below 100. This is surprising. The reasons behind this require further observation of October's delivery figures to draw conclusions.
Geely Motor was the last to enter the boxy car market, giving it a significant late-mover advantage. Its product strategy directly targeted the best-selling Titan 7, offering larger batteries, lower prices, and stronger off-road capabilities, including a ladder frame and triple-motor setup. This allows the Warship 700 to appeal to a broader audience, directly pressuring the Titan 7. Geely's data shows the model received over 40,000 pre-orders during the pre-sale phase and secured 10,000 firm orders within 12 minutes of its October 11 launch. However, its ultimate performance depends on subsequent sales data.
Outside the top five Chinese automakers, BAIC Off-Road has performed well recently, with its BJ30 selling 9,075 units in September, ranking fourth—even entering the top three last month. Among the top ten, BAIC Off-Road has two models: the BJ30 and BJ40 Extended Range.

According to September's rankings, 27 boxy car models sold below 1,000 units monthly, while eight sold fewer than 100 units: Shenlan G318, Ford Smart Bronco, Yangwang U8, Haval Big Dog PLUS PHEV, Santa Fe, Baojun Yep, Jishi 01, and Tank 500 Fuel. The Yangwang U8, priced in the million-yuan range, warrants separate discussion. Among models selling below 1,000 units monthly, the newly launched Xiangjie G9 in August sold 234 units, though deliveries only began in late September, lasting just one week. Its real growth phase is yet to come. Based on early orders, the model performed well, securing 15,000 orders in three days. October's delivery figures will provide further insights.
However, this does not mean trailing products lack opportunities for a turnaround. For instance, the BJ30 initially sold just over 1,000 units monthly after its 2024 launch but achieved a comeback through facelifts and marketing adjustments over two years. Similarly, the Leopard 5 initially underperformed but now consistently ranks in the top ten after price adjustments and product updates. Currently, the boxy car market allows entry into the top ten with monthly sales above 3,000 units, while only a few models exceed 10,000 units monthly. Despite high enthusiasm and expanding capacity, this remains a relatively small, fiercely competitive niche market. Trailing products, especially those seeking a comeback, must conduct thorough market research and demonstrate sincerity to avoid repeated failures.
