Avatr Steers Away from Pioneering Aesthetics, Embracing a More Mainstream Appeal

On October 11, the Avatr T09 concept car made its global debut in Paris, France, marking the introduction of the first model in Avatr's new "prestige luxury lineup." This vehicle is positioned as a spacious six-seat SUV within the 500,000-yuan price bracket, boasting a length of 5285mm and a wheelbase of 3150mm. It stands as Avatr's largest model to date and the inaugural offering in the brand's fresh "flagship lineup."

In terms of exterior design, the Avatr T09 concept adopts a design philosophy termed "Shangding Longzu" (Business Tripod and Dragon's Feet). The front fascia of the new car features a closed dot-matrix grille, paired with a raised clamshell front hood, lending the entire front end a robust and dignified presence, rather than a sporty, low-slung silhouette. Previously, the Avatr 11 showcased a sharply sloping roofline from the B-pillar onwards, but the T09 replaces this with a nearly flat roofline and a full-bodied side profile. The rear of the vehicle is adorned with three-dimensional cut shapes on both sides, giving it a square and sturdy look.

It's clear that the new car's style diverges significantly from the Avatr models that people have come to know. Unlike the previous niche design approach that took bold risks, the Avatr 9 series has clearly softened its edges, transitioning towards a mainstream luxury route characterized by squareness and solidity. The official describes it as a new high-end lineup design language that will coexist alongside the pioneering series, forming a "dual lineage."

The design of the new car no longer continues Avatr's previous sense of innovation; instead, it shifts towards a mainstream luxury aesthetic marked by squareness and solidity.

Reflecting on the new energy vehicle market of earlier years, when choices were limited compared to today, many car designs were conservative, and few brands dared to take risks in terms of appearance. In this market environment, the Avatr 11 made its formal debut, featuring a butterfly-wing front fascia, a sloping roofline, and a windowless rear design. These elements brought strong recognizability and an overall avant-garde style, setting it apart from the crowd.

However, the gap between ideals and reality is tested by the market. This highly avant-garde appearance garnered some aesthetic appreciation but failed to translate into consistent sales performance.

In 2024, the highly anticipated Avatr 11 and 12 achieved sales of 9,300 and 31,000 units, respectively. In 2025, the Avatr 06 and 07 emerged as sales leaders, with the two models delivering 37,000 and 57,000 units throughout the year, respectively, holding their own for a while. However, by the first half of 2026, Avatr's total sales had dropped to less than 28,000 units, representing a 53% year-on-year decline.

Moreover, controversies over Avatr's design have persisted. Some critics argue that good looks often come at the expense of practicality. The Avatr's sloping roofline reduces rear headroom, and the windowless rear design compromises rear visibility, while the trunk opening is not particularly spacious. Some netizens even describe the car as "good-looking but impractical."

In fact, since its first mass-produced model, the 11, Avatr has been reluctant to adopt a plain and steady appearance. A highly recognizable exterior design should be an advantage, but recognizability and universality are not synonymous.

For a car to gain acceptance in the mainstream family decision-making process within the 200,000 to 300,000-yuan range, it must undergo a completely different level of scrutiny. Is there sufficient space? Is it comfortable to sit in? Is charging convenient? Can the price persuade the other members of the household? And will it still look appealing after three years?

The debut of the Avatr T09 represents not only an exploration of the product lineup in the upward direction but also a recalibration between "staying true to oneself" and "catering to the market." Whether the design shift will be accepted by consumers, whether the 500,000-yuan pricing can hold in the market, and whether the flagship and pioneering series can both achieve success remain questions that can only be answered through subsequent market performance.
