Authorities report that a gas leak has occurred at SK Hynix’s Cheongju plant in South Korea, leaving six individuals injured.

As this news is just breaking, officials have yet to release comprehensive details regarding the exact nature of the leaked gas, the underlying cause of the incident, or its potential impact on the semiconductor production lines in question.

It is noteworthy that just days prior, on May 27th, an incident involving unexpected sparks from semiconductor processing equipment also took place at SK Hynix’s M11 facility in Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si. This prompted an immediate evacuation of staff for roughly one hour, though fortunately, it resulted in no injuries or disruptions to production.

Data indicates that DDR5 contract prices saw a rise for two consecutive quarters in the first half of 2026. Nevertheless, this growth has been persistently hampered by sluggish demand in the PC sector and a slow pace of channel inventory clearance. The market initially anticipated that prices would only begin to accelerate after entering the traditional peak season in the third quarter. However, the Cheongju incident may now throw this straightforward forecast into disarray.

Presently, the global DRAM channel inventory turnover days have decreased to less than six weeks, marking a near-five-year low. In such a low-inventory climate, any unplanned production halts are likely to be magnified as indicators of structural shortages.
