OFweek, July 22 – According to a report by Bloomberg today, Moonshot AI is set to commence negotiations for its final round of private financing before its anticipated Hong Kong IPO in August, with a pre-investment valuation target of $50 billion, roughly equivalent to RMB 339 billion.

The meteoric rise of the Kimi k3 large model has paved the way for new valuation heights for this company, which was established in April 2023.

Half a year ago, Moonshot AI was valued at $4.3 billion. Now, its latest pre-investment valuation has soared to $31.5 billion, approximately RMB 213.5 billion. Should the August financing round conclude at the $50 billion mark, the company's valuation will have skyrocketed from $4.3 billion to $50 billion in under a year, marking an astonishing increase of over seven times.

This remarkable growth is underpinned by a financing spree. Just halfway through 2026, Moonshot AI has already secured its fifth round of financing—a frequency unparalleled among Chinese large model startups. Capital is pouring in at a pace that outstrips product launches.

From January to February, Moonshot AI completed three successive financing rounds, raising $500 million, $700 million, and $700 million, respectively, with its valuation climbing from $10 billion to $18 billion. In May, an additional approximately $2 billion was secured, pushing its post-investment valuation beyond $20 billion.

A new financing round commenced in June, with the pre-investment valuation leaping to $31.5 billion. This round is expected to wrap up in the coming days, after which Moonshot AI will promptly initiate Pre-IPO negotiations. According to Bloomberg, the company could make its debut on the Hong Kong capital market within the next six months.

Remarkably, the accelerated financing pace nearly aligned with the release of Kimi k3. The surge in user numbers and engagement following the model's launch prompted investors to reassess Moonshot AI's commercialization potential. The model's popularity became the linchpin of its valuation.

A pre-investment valuation of $50 billion is already substantial on a global scale. OpenAI's 2025 funding round valued it at approximately $500 billion (as per the Financial Times), while Anthropic's valuation during the same period was around $183 billion (according to Reuters). If Moonshot AI reaches this milestone, its scale will approach a quarter of Anthropic's.

Domestic rankings further underscore this point. According to Caixin, Zhipu AI is valued at approximately RMB 200 billion, while MiniMax, Baichuan Intelligence, and others are mostly valued in the billion-dollar range. If Moonshot AI finalizes this round at $50 billion, it will significantly widen its lead over its peers.

However, as valuations soar, so do the direct questions. Whether the revenue of large model companies can justify their lofty valuations remains to be seen, as the heights achieved through financing will ultimately need to be substantiated by financial performance.

Moonshot AI is placing significant bets on Kimi's consumer-facing business. Kimi k3 emphasizes long-text and Agent capabilities (where an Agent is an intelligent entity capable of autonomously scheduling tools to complete multi-step tasks), and its user engagement has surged since its release. According to the company, Kimi's monthly active users now rank among the top in China.

The Hong Kong market's tolerance for unprofitable tech companies is a key factor in Moonshot AI's decision to list there rather than in the U.S. Chapter 18C rules permit unprofitable specialized tech companies to go public, a path already taken by SenseTime and Horizon Robotics. However, Hong Kong's stock market has relatively lower liquidity, and there have been instances where stocks have fallen below their IPO prices.

From $4.3 billion to $50 billion, Moonshot AI has achieved in one year what others might take three to five years. As the valuation rocket relies on successive financing rounds to maintain its trajectory, what will ultimately determine its landing spot is whether Kimi can convert user traffic into sustainable revenue.
